Gowmariamman Temple Story

Legend has it that a Chettiappar was once in the region selling his turmeric. He saw seven beautiful ladies and wanted to sell his turmeric to them. But the women were not interested. Later Gaumari in the disguise of a woman came there and asked for turmeric equal to the weight of a flower petal from her hair. But even after putting the whole of turmeric in his hands it could not measure equal to the flower petal.

Chettiappar soon realized that the women in front of him were no human beings. He then fell on the feet of Gowmariamman who gave him darshan. He then built temple dedicated to Sapta Matrikas at the spot.

The temple has subsidiary shrines dedicated to Madurai Veeran, Chettiappar, Dwarapalakas, Karuppannan and Ayyanar.  There are also huge figures of elephants and horses in the shrine.
