Santan Saptami Vrat Katha – Story Read While Observing Santan Saptami Fasting - संतान सप्तमी व्रत कथा

Santan Saptami Fasting is observed by those couples who do not have children. Santan Saptami Vrat Katha (story) is listened by those observing the fast. The story was first narrated by Rishi Lomesha to Vasudeva and Devaki – the parents of Sri Krishna. They had then observed Santan Saptami vrat before giving birth to Sri Krishna.

Once there lived two friends Chandramukhi and Roopvati. Chandramukhi was the queen of the kingdom and Roopvati was the wife of a priest. Once on a Santan Saptami day they went to take bath in a river and here they found women making murtis (idols) of Shiva and Goddess Parvati and offering prayers.

They found out that the women were observing Santan Saptami Vrat and offered their prayers. They wore mauli (red thread). But once they reached home they did not keep fast as they were busy with their work.

Years passed by and Chandramukhi and Roopvati had numerous other births.

After several hundred years they were again born as Ishwari and Bhushana. Ishwari was the queen of the kingdom and Bhushana was the wife of a priest.

Bhushana and Ishwari were friends. Bhushana had eight children but Ishwari had no children.

Ishwari grew jealous of Bhushana and tried to harm her children. But she was unable to harm the children as they were protected by some power.

Ishwari then confessed to Bhushana about her intentions.

Bhushana then told her that she remembered about the greatness of Santan Saptami Vrat and had kept the vrat. This is the reason why she had so many children and they could not be harmed by anyone.

Queen Ishwari then observed Santan Saptami Vrat and she gave birth to healthy children.

Since then this fast is observed by couples for giving birth to healthy children and also for the protection of their children.

Santa Saptami Fasting is observed on the Shukla Paksha Saptami or the seventh day during the waxing phase of moon in Bhadrapad month as per traditional Hindu lunar calendar.

संतान सप्तमी व्रत कथा

कथा के अनुसार प्राचीन काल में नहुष अयोध्यापुरी का प्रतापी राजा था। उसकी पत्नी का नाम चंद्रमुखी था। उसके राज्य में ही विष्णुदत्त नामक एक ब्राह्मण रहता था, जिसकी पत्नी का नाम रूपवती था। रानी चंद्रमुखी और रूपवती में परस्पर घनिष्ठ प्रेम था एक दिन वे दोनों सरयू में स्नान करने गईं। जहां अन्य स्त्रियां भी स्नान कर रही थीं।

उन स्त्रियों ने वहीं पार्वती-शिव की प्रतिमा बनाकर विधिपूर्वक उनका पूजन किया, तब रानी चंद्रमुखी और रूपवती द्वारा उन स्त्रियों से पूजन का नाम तथा विधि के बारे में पूछने पर एक स्त्री ने बताते हुए कहा कि यह संतान देने व्रत वाला है। इस व्रत की बारे में सुनकर रानी चंद्रमुखी और रूपवती ने भी इस व्रत को जीवन-पर्यन्त करने का संकल्प किया और शिवजी के नाम का डोरा बांध लिया। लेकिन घर पहुंचने पर वे अपने संकल्प को भूल गईं। जिसके कारण मृत्यु के पश्चात रानी वानरी और ब्राह्मणी मुर्गी की योनि में पैदा हुईं।

कालांतर में दोनों पशु योनि छोड़कर पुनः मनुष्य योनि में आईं। चंद्रमुखी मथुरा के राजा पृथ्वीनाथ की रानी बनी और रूपवती ने फिर एक ब्राह्मण के घर जन्म लिया। इस जन्म में ईश्वरी नाम से रानी और भूषणा नाम से ब्राह्मणी जानी गईं। राजपुरोहित अग्निमुखी के साथ भूषणा का विवाह हुआ। उन दोनों में इस जन्म में भी बड़ा प्रेम हो गया।

पूर्व जन्म में व्रत भूलने के कारण इस जन्म में भी रानी की कोई संतान नहीं हुई। जबकि व्रत को भूषणा ने अब भी याद रखा था जिसके कारण उसने सुन्दर और स्वस्थ आठ पुत्रों ने जन्म दिया। संतान नहीं होने से दुखी रानी ईश्वरी से एक दिन भूषणा उससे मिलने गई। इस पर रानी के मन में भूषणा को लेकर ईर्ष्या पैदा हो गई और उसने उसके बच्चों को मारने का प्रयास किया। परंतु वह बालकों का बाल भी बांका न कर सकी।

इस पर उसने भूषणा को बुलाकर सारी बात बताईं और फिर क्षमा याचना करके उससे पूछा- आखिर तुम्हारे बच्चे मरे क्यों नहीं। भूषणा ने उसे पूर्वजन्म की बात स्मरण कराई साथ ही ये भी कहा कि उसी व्रत के प्रभाव से मेरे पुत्रों को आप चाहकर भी न मार सकीं। भूषणा के मुख से सारी बात जानने के बाद रानी ईश्वरी ने भी संतान सुख देने वाला यह व्रत विधिपूर्वक रखा, तब व्रत के प्रभाव से रानी गर्भवती हुई और एक सुंदर बालक को जन्म दिया। उसी समय से यह व्रत पुत्र-प्राप्ति के साथ ही संतान की रक्षा के लिए प्रचलित है।
