Tilkut Chaturthi - Til Kund Chaturthi in North India - Tilkut Chauth 2025

Tilkut Chaturthi, or Tilkut Chauth or Til Chaturthi, is observed on the fourth day during the waning phase of moon (krishna paksha) in Magh Month as per traditional Hindu calendar followed in North India. Tilkut Chauth 2025 date is January 17. A similar festival is observed in western parts of India especially in Maharashtra and it is known as Til Kund Chaturthi and is observed on Magh Shukla Paksha Chaturthi (February 1, 2025).

‘Til’ is Sesame seeds and the day is dedicated to eating delicacies made of Til. The ritual is also known as Til Kunda Chaturthi and Tilkunda Jayanti.


Til kutta Chaturthi falls during the peak winter season and it is believed that eating Til helps in keeping the body fit during the harsh winter.

The festival is of great importance in Bihar, Jharkhand and in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Tilkut Chauth Puja Vidhi

  • The puja is performed in the evening.
  • Northwest side of the house is chosen for the puja.
  • A clay Ganesh murti should be placed on pink-colored cloth.
  • Lamp should be lit using coconut oil.
  • Dhoop and Agarbatti should be of rose.
  • Flowers offered should be rose.
  • Chandan or Abeer Tilak should be applied.
  • Offer Durva Grass.
  • Prasad or bhog or naivedya should be Revadi - a sweet prepared using Til (Sesame) and Sugar. And prasad prepared is Tilkut
  • The mantra ॐ गं गणेश्वराय विघ्ननायकाय नमः॥ should be chanted 108 times using a Rudraksh Mala.

Puja of Chandra - Moon

  • On Sighting of moon - the following puja is to be performed.
  • Take water in a bowl - then add rose water or Itar, sugar, and chandan and then perform puja of Chandra. Argya is performed.
  • The mantra ॐ श्रीं चन्द्राय सकलार्तिहराय नमः॥ should be chanted.
After the puja, the prasad is shared with family members.

Tilkut Recipe

Til (sesame) is roasted till the aroma is released. It is then allowed to cool down. Jaggery is then mixed to the til. In some places, both are grinded slowly.
