Lotus from Vishnu’s Navel and Brahma on it – the origin and story

One of the most popular images in Hinduism is that of a lotus sprouting from the navel of Vishnu with Brahma seated on the lotus. After the great deluge, Srihari Vishnu alone floats atop a banyan leaf. Jagadamba (Goddess Shakti) appears before the Vatapatrasayi Vishnu and reminds him that it is time for the next cycle of creation. Then from the navel of Vishnu appears a lotus with Brahma atop it.

Brahma then pays his respect to Jagadamba and Vishnu and begins the next cycle of creation. Brahma then created the Saptarishis and Prajapatis. All living beings were then created.

This version is mainly mentioned in the Devi Bhagavatam.

There are numerous versions regarding the origin of life on earth in Hindu Puranas. This is one among them.
