Makara Chowa – the First Tuesday in Makaram Month in Kerala



Makara Chowa is an auspicious day which falls on the first Tuesday of Makara Masam (Makaram Month) as per traditional calendar followed in Kerala. Makara Chowa 2017 date is January 17. The day is of great significance in Goddess Bhagavati (Shakti) temples in Kerala. It is an important date at the Thiru Venkitachalapathy Temple in Guruvayur and hundreds of devotees offer prayers on the day here.

Makara Chowa falls during the Uttarayna Punyakalam and this period is chosen for propitiating Hindu deities. This is a period of positive change begins with Makara Sankranti and will last till the Dakshinayana begins in July.
