Ugadi festival is celebrated with lot of fervor in Mauritius, especially by the Hindus. It marks the traditional New Year Day. This festival is known as Ugadi for people having Telugu and Kannada tradition, whereas it is known as Gudi Padva for Marathi and Goan tradition. It marks the harvest season.
The festival is observed Chaitra Suddha Padyami, the first
day of the bright fortnight in the month of Chaitra. It is a day of great joy
and happiness. There is a strong belief that this day's happenings foreshadow
the course of events in the entire year head. Everybody in the house gets up
early in the morning takes an oil bath and puts on the finest dress. Visit the
nearby temple and taking blessing from the deities, gurus and elders. Special delicacies
are prepared for the occasion.
