Karumari, or Goddess Karumariamman, is a manifestation of
Mother Goddess Shakti and she is widely worshipped in Tamil Nadu. Sunday is
considered as the auspicious day to worship Karumariamman. There is a story associated
with Surya, sun god, and Goddess Karumari, which explains the greatness of Sunday
worship of the Goddess.
Legend has it that once Goddess Karumari took the form of a
nomadic woman and visited Surya, the sun god. She told Surya that she could
forecast his future. But Surya neglected her. This angered Goddess Karumari.
She left in anger and suddenly Surya lost his brightness and
his glory started declining.
Surya realized his mistake and asked for forgiveness.
Surya asked Devi Karumari to observe Sunday as an auspicious
day to worship her.
The Goddess pardoned Surya and he got back his brightness.
Even today, Sun’s rays fall on the feet of the murti of Goddess
Karumariamman at the famous Thiruverkadu Karumariamman Temple in Tamil Nadu.
