Magh Mahina 2019 – Magha Month 2019 in North Indian Hindu Calendar - Rituals and Importance


Magh Mahina is the eleventh month in a traditional Hindu Hindi calendar followed in North India. Magh Month 2019 begins on January 21 and ends on February 19, 2019. This calendar is followed mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Chhattisgarh and other North Indian states. A month in these regions is calculated from the day after Purnima or full moon to the next Purnima. The current year in the Hindi Calendar is Saka 2075.

Magh Mahina Importance 

Magh month is considered ideal for Holy dip (Snan), Shradh and Charity. Various vrat and restriction in food is followed by Hindus.

The month is dedicated to Madhava form of Bhagavan Sri Krishna.


Morning Ritual in Magh Month

Wake just before sunrise and take bath. Then take water in a small puja vessel. Put some sesame, flower, durva or kusha grass and chandan. Then chant the following prayer.

ऊं तत्सत् अद्य माघे मासि अमुकपक्षे अमुक-तिथिमारभ्य मकरस्त रविं यावत्  ........ (स्वयं का गोत्र बोलें) ..... (स्वयं का उपनाम बोलें) वैकुण्ठनिवासपूर्वक श्रीविष्णुप्रीत्यर्थं प्रात: स्नानं करिष्ये

Magh Month Morning Prayer

दु:खदारिद्रयनाशाय श्रीविष्णोस्तोषणाय: च।
प्रात:स्नानं करोम्यद्य माघे पापविनाशनम्।
मकरस्थे रवौ माघे गोविन्दाच्युत माधव।
स्नानेनानेन मे देव यथोक्तपलदो भव।।
दिवाकर जगन्नाथ प्रभाकर नमोस्तु ते।
परिपूर्णं कुरुष्वेदं माघस्नानं महाव्रतम्।
माघमासमिमं पुण्यं स्नानम्यहं देव माधव।
तीर्थस्यास्य जले नित्यं प्रसीद भगवन् हरे।।

Holy Things to do in Magh Month

  • Take bath before sunrise.
  • Mix til in the bathing water.
  • Offer prayers to Surya by chanting Gayatri mantra and doing argya - showing water to sun.
  • Chant the name of Vishnu on all days.
  • Participate in satsang, pravachan and read about the Holinesss of Magh month.
  • Eat hot food.
  • Donate food items that are heat producing like Til (Sesame) or Bajra.

Holy Bath in Rivers

Performing Holy Bath in rivers in Magh month is considered highly meritorious. Taking holy dip in rivers at Prayag, Kashi, Naimisharanya, Kurukshetra, Haridwar and at other holy places will help ing achieving Akshaya Punya - Merit that is never diminishable.

Magh Mahina 2019

Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, Saraswati Puja and Ratha Saptami are observed in this month.

Note - It must be noted that Magh month in calendars followed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka begins on February 4, 2019, and ends on March 6, 2019.

Chaturthi Vrat or Sankashti Ganesh Chaturti in Magh Month 2019 is on January 24. The Chandrodaya or Moonrise time as per North Indian calendars is  8:27 PM.
