Mind Of A True Yogi And That Of A Man In Sound Sleep

The distinction between a man absorbed in contemplation on Brahman and the man who is in deep sleep should be clearly understood; in contemplation the mind is kept under control and does not lie defunct as it were like the mind of a man in deep sleep This is really the fearless state of Brahman with the rays of knowledge shining all round. It has been stated that with the attainment of knowledge that Atma alone is real, the mind becomes devoid of all hopes and doubts, and like fire without firewood it becomes extinct and remains under control. It is evident that when mind is unminded there will be no duality. Yogis should understand the nature of mind, when it is kept under control and is made defunct with true knowledge. It might appear that the mind of a Yogi is like that of a man in deep sleep both being almost defunct and there being apparently no distinction between them. But it is not really so; the mind of a Yogi differs from that of a man in sound sleep in that the...

Ears are to be adorned by listening to the scriptures and not with ear rings; hands by alms giving and not with bracelets, and body by benevolence and not with the application of sandal-paste. He restrains his friend from committing sins, and induces him to do good deeds.   He conceals the unseemly secrets of a friend, projecting only his good qualities.   He does not desert his friend in difficulties, but gives timely assistance.   Saints describe these as the characteristics of a true friend. Wanting to reform the wicked with nectar-sweet advice, is like trying to control an elephant with the pith of a lotus-stem, or cutting a diamond with delicate petals of the Shireesh flower, or sweetening the salty ocean with a drop of honey. Indeed, a son is he who makes his father happy with his go...

Achintya In Hinduism – The Concept Of Inconceivable

Achintya is that which is beyond imagination or intellection. Acintya is that which does not come within the grasp of prakriti or primordial matter. According to Upanishads, atman or Brahman is Achintya. The Vedic seers realized the supreme through their intuitive power. Being a fact only of experience, words are inadequate to give expression to Brahman. Atman was beyond definition. Yajnavalkya could only describe it in negative terms – neti, neti. It is not in space or time; it is free from causal necessity. It is above all conceptions and conceptual differentiations. It is inconceivable or Achintya. Yet, it is not to be confused with non-being. Atman is immutable. He is sat, nitya (eternal) and mahat (greater than the greatest). The concept of the Infinite is Achintya. And that alone is the highest bliss. He is Achintya because he is all pervading. He is called Vishnu, which means all pervading. Hence, he is called bhuh, bhuvah, svah (the earth or intermediate field and hea...
