Vengara Ettammal Bhagavathy Kavu Temple – Theyyam Kaliyattam Thira Festival

Vengara Ettammal Bhagavathy Kavu temple is located at Vengara in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy and numerous other deities that are worshipped in kavu, tharavadu and sacred places in the region. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held once in two years for three days in Malayalam Dhanu Masam – Dhanu 12 to Dhanu 14 (December 27 to December 29). Important theyyams that can be witnessed at Vengara Ettammal Bhagavathy Kavu temple  are Kathivanoor Veeran theyyam, Kundor Chamundi theyyam, Gulikan theyyam, Vishnumoorthi theyyam, Kurathi theyyam, Gurikkal theyyam, Veeran theyyam, Veera Kali theyyam and Puthiya Bhagavathi theyyam.

This is a small traditional Kerala style temple with a chathura sreekovil. The roof of the sanctum are decorated with traditional temple motifs. There are no major structures. Other deities popularly worshipped in Kavu and temples in Kannur region are also worshipped in the temple in small sreekovils, under trees and atop raised square platforms, which are exposed to the elements. Sankranti in every Malayalamasam and Vishu are important days in the temple.
