Devprayag: The Sacred Sangam of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi
Nestled in the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, Devprayag holds an unparalleled spiritual position in Hindu Dharma. It is the final and most significant confluence among the Panch Prayag, where the sacred rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi unite to form Maa Ganga. Origin of the Name Devprayag
The name Devprayag is derived from Sage Dev Sharma, a revered rishi of Satyug. As per ancient belief, Sage Dev Sharma performed intense worship of Lord Vishnu at this very place. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Vishnu granted him a boon that this sacred confluence would be known by his name for eternity. Thus, the sangam came to be called Devprayag, meaning “the divine confluence.”
Sacred Geography of the Rivers
Bhagirathi originates from Gaumukh, the glacial mouth near Gangotri, while Alaknanda rises from Satopanth near Badrinath. After flowing through their respective sacred paths, the two rivers meet at Devprayag. From this point onward, they lose their individual identities and flow together as the holy Ganga.
In Garhwal tradition, Bhagirathi is affectionately regarded as the mother-in-law of Alaknanda, a cultural expression reflecting reverence and familial symbolism associated with rivers.
An additional sacred belief speaks of the hidden Saraswati river, which is said to originate near Mana village and manifest invisibly at Devprayag. Devotees believe Saraswati emerges spiritually from the feet of Lord Rama at the Raghunath Temple, further sanctifying the sangam.
Association with Lord Rama
Devprayag holds immense importance in the life of Lord Rama. After the slaying of Ravana, who was a learned Brahmin, Lord Rama sought atonement for the act of Brahmin killing. On the advice of sages, he meditated at Devprayag for several years to cleanse himself of this sin.
Footprints believed to be of Lord Rama can be seen at Ram Kunda near the Raghunath Temple. The temple itself is dedicated to Lord Rama and stands as a major spiritual center for devotees. The descent of Saraswati from the feet of the deity here further reinforces the sanctity of the site.
King Bhagirath and the Descent of Ganga
Devprayag is also associated with King Bhagirath, whose penance brought Goddess Ganga from the heavens to liberate his ancestors. One belief holds that Bhagirath pursued Ganga up to this prayag, making Devprayag the definitive point where her earthly journey as Ganga begins.

Major Hindu festivals such as Makar Sankranti, Ganga Dussehra, and Kartik Purnima are celebrated with great devotion at Devprayag. Ritual bathing at the sangam during these times is believed to grant spiritual merit and liberation from sins.
