"People across the world are interested in the Hindu Goddess Kali. There have been various artistic endeavors based on the glory of Kali and the folk tales surrounding her. One such example is ‘The Talking Hands of Travancore’.
This is a Russian film, made in 1981. It is primarily a
psychedelic short film, where the fierce energy of Kali is interpreted through
animation and Kerala's Kathakali dance. This Soviet short film, directed by
Vladimir Pekar, utilizes various mudras (hand gestures) and artistic styles of
Kathakali dance.
The film in few seconds presents the entire story of the avatar of Durga.
In the scenes related to Kali, the Goddess dominates the
screen with her fiery eyes, sharp movements, and powerful presence! Her
gestures simultaneously embody both destruction and protection!
Experts believe that this presentation has revealed the depth of the symbolic language of Kathakali dance. Through this, the creators have offered a brilliant animated experience, telling the story of the power of Goddess Kali in simple language.
