Kalashtami, or Mahakaal Bhairavashtami, is the most auspicious day dedicated to Lord Kaala Bhairava – a manifestation of Lord Shiva. Kal Bhairava is the God of Time – Kal means ‘time’ and ‘Bhairava’ the manifestation of Shiva. Ashtami after Purnima, the eighth day after full moon, is considered the ideal day to propitiate Kala Bhairav. In 2012, Kala Bhairav Ashtami and Kal Bhairav Jayanti is on December 6.
It must be noted that Kalashtami is observed on the eighth day after full moon on all months by Shiva devotees.
Legend has it that it Lord Shiva in the form of Mahakaleshwar chopped off the fifth head of Brahma and performed penance on this day. There are several legends regarding the reason for chopping of the fifth head of Brahma. Once legend has it that the Trimurti – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva once had an argument over who is the most powerful. During the argument, Brahma uttered a remark which enraged Shiva. Suddenly, he produced Bhairava from his body and ordered to chop the head of Brahma.
This terrified the demigods (Devas) and humans and this form of Shiva is believed to punish sinners and he carries a ‘Danda’ – a rod to punish.
The most popular Bhairava Ashtami is observed on the eighth day during the waning phase of moon in Margashirsha month in traditional Hindi calendar.
Kal Bhairava’s vehicle is a black dog and in some places dogs are fed on the day.
Shiva devotees take morning bath and perform pujas. Special pujas are also offered to dead ancestors in the morning. Staunch devotees keep vigil at night and narrate stories of Mahakaleshwar.

It is confusing !
Pls clarify it is 20 th Nov 2008 or 6th Dec 2008 ?
Because 20th Nov is Karthika krishna ashtami
where as
6th Dec is Margashira shukla ashtami !
20th Nov is Karthika krishna ashtami in traditional Gujarati and Maharashtrian calendar. In calendar followed in North India 20th November is Margashira Krishna ashtami. So the confusion. 20th is the correct date.
19th Nov 2008 is Mahakal Ashtami or 20th Nov 2008
Is 19th Nov or 20th Nov 2008. In Panchang / Hindi Calander 19th is the Mahakal Ashtami.
How to worship on that say?
Even I came across both the dates but majority of the calendars and Panchangam are suggesting 20th November. In some regions, Ashtami might be starting on 19th November and end on 20th. This might be reason why in your region it is on 19th. You should always follow the panchang of your region.

plz correct me are the Kalashtami and Kalabhairav Jayanthi denotes same event?
Also tell me when Kalabhairav Jayanthi comes in 2009?
Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma did not always get along with each other. Each thought that they were more important than the other, a common argument amongst beings. There are times when their other forms would mention of the higher power. In the context of this incident they were disputing amongst themselves who out of the three was superior. Violence erupts at the slightest provocation or misunderstanding.
enjoy for kalbhairav jayanti plz. Visit at ujjain kalbhairav mandir and take gift from god.
