Tirupati Balaji Temple to Allow Only One Visit a Year for an Individual

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is planning to make the Tirupati Balaji Darshan once in a year affair for an individual – a devotee can only visit the temple once in a year. The reason is to control the daily crowd which at present is around 60,000 to 70,000. This number is expected to touch 100,000 daily in three years time. Nothing has yet been decided but the plan is seen as a way to reduce the wait for darshan which is around 10 hours now. India Today reports
A 'biometric system' will record fingerprints and photographs of pilgrims so that no one gets darshan tickets for the second time in a year.

Today – February 8, 2011 – is Vasant Panchami, a popular festival in North India, and it heralds the arrival of the spring season and coincides with Saraswati Puja. ‘Vasant or Basant’ means spring and ‘Panchami’ is the fifth day in a Hindu lunar calendar after Amavasi in Magh month. On the day, Saraswati Puja is performed in North and Eastern parts of India on the day. Today – February 8, 2011 – is Saraswati Puja. This puja dedicated to Goddess Saraswati observed in Magh Month (January – February) is of great significance in Eastern and Northern Parts of India. It is believed in these regions that Goddess Saraswathi, the goddess of learning and music, appeared on this day on earth. The day is also known as Boi Puja (book worship). Elaborate Saraswati pujas are held on the day in houses, temples and in educational institutions. Yellow color dress is preferred on this day as it stands for prosperity and knowledge.Children are introduced to the world of letters on this day.
