In Hinduism, Shradh is the rituals performed by relatives for the departed souls of dead ancestors, parents and relatives. Shradh Dates in 2013 as per Hindu calendar followed in India is from September 20 to October 4, 2013. Below are the Mahalaya Pitru Paksha and Shradh 2013 dates. Tarpan and Shradh are performed on all Amavasi or no moon days. But the most important period to perform Shradh is the Pitru Paksha period during the Krishna Paksha fortnight in Ashwin month (September – October). In some regions this period is the Bhadrapad Krishna Paksha.

Shradh and Tarpan are also performed on all Amavasi day in a year. You can find the Amavasi dates in 2013 in this earlier article – Amavas 2013 dates.
Apart from this Shradh is also performed on the birth star of the dead person and also on the nakshatra the person died.
Another popular date for performing Shradh is the Basant Panchami day in Magh month. In 2013, Basant Panchami is on February 15.

Hi Abhilash,, My Grand Fathar had expired on 7th July 1995(Friday). He regularly comes to my dreams when this year shrad were going to be start. He came to my my dream too...and my Grand Mother was expired on 15 Jan 2010(Friday), few days back she also came to my dream and In that dream I was asking her to eat something as I was expecting in dream that she is hungry.

@ Alpana this depends on the region you are living. In some places priests do not do such pujas during pitru paksha period. But if the priest is ready there should be no problem. You can also do the puja if no one in your family is doing Shradh.
@ Ajay Bharti...You should do Shradh. You are really lucky as you are able to communicate with your grand parents through your dream.
Please offer them food as per the rules in your community. You can do this usually on Amavasi or no moon day.
Please also feed a poor people on the day as per your capacity.

Hi, is it fine if someone starts a business during the shradh days (above mentioned)or is it recomended to wait untill oct 8th ?
is there any alternative (pooja or ritual) if I dont want to wait untill 8th and want to start business ?
I am completely unaware of all these rituals and my mother says it has to be followed. I need some way out without hurting her feelings. Pls help.
@ Saurbh....Generally auspicious events are avoided during the period. No there are no alternative pujas in most regions as priests only perform the shradh rituals during the period.

Hi, I do not know the nakshatra of the death of my dad. He died on Feb 26 2009. I loved him too much. Though cicumstances were that I could not stay with him. I want to do his shradh (not only his but all purvaj), please suggest as I missed him every morning and cry for him.

Some say/think that it is sufficient that if they take care of their parents while they are here & there is no evidence that where the soul reaches hence there will not be much of use. But the truth is otherwise that While Parents are in Sthoola Sareera they should be served as an Emperor/Queen. After their departure they should be worshipped prior to GODS/GODESSES thro Amavasya/Mahalaya Paksha/ Shradham.
You need to check for the Tidhi on Feb 26 2009.

@Vejeysri...You can perform Shradh next year on 11th day of Aadi Masam. This will mostly on July 25. You can also do rituals on Amavasya and also on Thai Amavasya day in Jan - feb. This calculation is based on the guess that you follow Tamil Calendar.

@Swati...you can do Shradh on Mahalaya Amavasya day - October 15, 2012. You can also do annadanam (food donation)to poor children.

Sima...yes child birth can happen during the period. It is not bad. Sri Krishna was born during the dark phase of moon.
@Purnima Shradh is the full moon day Shradh. Pratipada Shradh is the first shradh day after full moon. In 2012, these two tithi fall on the same date. You should perform it on September 30.
