Hi, I am regular follower of Sankashtahara chathurthi vrath. But I am always confused with dates, because some sites mention a day earlier than specified in this site.I missed today because of the same reason. I live in California, so which one should I follow, can you please guide me on this. Thanks.

Kripal said...

This is because in Californa sometimes the dates fall a day earlier. This is based on regional panchang calculations. But most people now follow the Indian dates so you can follow it based on Indian dates mentioned above.

The moon rise time on February 2, 2010 in India is 9:50 PM as per calendars and panchangs.

Hello, I live in Mauritius. Do the fasting dates coincide with those above? Please tell me, some ppl say it is 1 day before...

Anonymous said...

For Mauritius it is the same as India. Just keeping following the English date...if you go too much into Tithi etc as per tradition then it will be very confusing as a day in hindu calendar ends differently. Navin

How to follow the dates for Sankasthi Chaturthi or any other festival in California. The calendar that i got from temple has different dates than the dates mentioned above. Please help. I feel guilty of not doing it right.

Anonymous said...

This is because of time difference between India and United States.

thanx

Actually I live in CA, but I follow the NJ calendar. In that calendar, they have marked
Sankasthi as a Tuesday in June 2010. Is this correct? Could you please let me know.

Anonymous said...

@ NJ calendar...this is normal. The Chaturthi Tithi begins a day early in some parts of United States when compared to india time so the difference. If you are following indian time for rituals then it is on Wednesday.

Hello,
Please remember that formatting of God in format other than God is wrong and hence formatting picture of Ganeshji with use of Banana leaves is also wrong as per Hindu dharma and culture.
We need to follow real dharma. Please remove this picture of Shri Ganeshji and replace as God. Thank you.Pravin Bhosale

Anonymous said...

Pravin, you actually said somethign which is not related to this trail.. wasted

God is a form as perceived by oneself..

there is no rule in hinduism about formatting God.. if so, can you please show where the real format is... God is a beleif a power an image humans have created for us to follow..

Lord Shiva is shown as a stone lingu,so is that wrong per your thoughts too ?
where are you reading all these rules from.. post the URL buddy.

the chathurthi puja has been given as june 30 but it was conducted at our local
temple(india) on tuesday june 29 , why this difference ?

and also there is difference in the puja date for some months in our calender to the dates given here( mostly difference is by 1 day )
which is the correct date? which one should i follow? why is there this difference

abhilash said...

We follow the dates provided by majority calendars. Sometimes in some regional calendars the Chaturthi will be marked a day earlier. This is because Chaturthi might be ending before the moonrise in these regions. But this is a very rare occurrence. For example, the June 29 Chaturthi was only applicable to a particular community calendar. Rest all calendars had marked it on June 30.

i am doing the puja today is it okay.is it valid?
or is it against the rules because the local temple wont have a puja ceremony today.

and also is it okay in the coming months to do the puja on the dates given here.
thanks u so much for answering

Anonymous said...

It is ok to do the puja today. Majority of the calendars are observing it today.

click on Major cities, select contry and then city closest to you. you can also go to your city and click on that.

You need to change the time UTC to your local using Change button at right Lowest corner.

Anonymous said...

Yes you should eat after moon rise....After moon rise you can eat normal food barring any meat..also do not use onion garlic and ginger in the food..if possible....

Anonymous said...

ok thanks I was also wondering if since it says that AFTER puja ur fasting begins....so i was wondering if i can eat something before puja?

Anonymous said...

.....also one thing....can i drink anything during the day? thanks again and if anyone can answer the question above about if i can eat anything before the the mornig puja because i read that the fasting starts AFTER the puja so can i? thanks again!

Anonymous said...

If you cannot keep complete fast you can eat food that does not contain garlic, onion potato etc. The best option is Sabudana Khichadi.

Oh yes you can drink water, milk or fruit juices. Just avoid anything non-veg thats all.

Anonymous said...

Can eat before the morning puja?

Anonymous said...

no..do not eat before puja....i never do this even on any normal day...

Anonymous said...

Is it okay to eat salt during fasting. Also can you eat the roti that is made of sangarah flour, one used during navratre. Also I read somewhere that it is okay to intake regular food after you have seen moon and conducted your pooja. Thanks

Anonymous said...

During the day you can eat fruits and drink water tea etc... salted food should only be eaten after seeing moon and doing the evening pooja..yes u can eat normal vegetarian food after evening puja.

Hello I live in Chicago and have started observing Sankashti fast. Since India time and Chicago time are different it gets confusing. So here is what I am doing. If Indian calendar (Kalanirnay) says that sankashti is on 22-March then I observe the fast on 22-March in Chicago (which is 22-March evening/night and 23-March early morning in India). This makes more sense. If I follow as per India time then that will mean most of the time I fast I will be sleeping since it will be night here. What kind of fast will that be if I am just sleeping and getting my fast done. Also in summers the moon rise time for Chicago is as late as 11:30 PM which gets very late. So I am planning to do puja and leave the fast at a decent time like 8:30 PM which is before moon rise. Any comments? I know some might think I am tweaking this to my comfort. But at the end of the day what Bahavana/faith/sincerity you have in the whole process should be important

Smitha said...

@ Anonymous..yes it is true that what is important is Bhavana, sinceirty. The way you are doing is apt. It is better to follow the same date as in India and avoid confusion.

can i take sandwitch during sankashti chaturti fast or maggie?????

Anonymous said...

can i eat sweet (not modak)

Aishwarya said...

Yes you can eat modak as prasad.

No you cannot eat sandwich or maggie during fasting.

I would like that suppose if we are on travel and out of our home on the day of sankasthi chaturthi, and can not go to ganesha temple and cant perform the pooja then what is to be done. Still I keep fast on that day if i am out of station. Please tell me.

Pandey said...

Yes you can keep fast. Ganesha is everywhere you don't need to be at a temple to worship him.

sami ramsis said...

This looks like a Man made religion. when i read different stories about Ganesha.
1) so many different stories of his birth
2) so many different versions of his broken tusk
3) so many scientific errors in stories.

If this character / God really existed then why people have so many different stories for one incident.
I believe these were characters made 1000's of years ago and mixed with the revelations, signs & miracles received by God.

Hi..

I have decided to start sankashti from this new year 2013.But i m staying in Dubai.according to dubai moon rise and date of sankashti different from Indian panchang.pls suggest me which one i follow.1st Jan is Tuesday to start puja but here in dubai it's different.pls guide me.

Anonymous said...

You can start following india schedule or US schedule but do follow moon rise in your location. this way even if dates are wrong, atleast you are doing the best. you can look at MyPanchang.com which is really good. many US temples follow this. Alternatively you can find the information from local temple.

Hi i am just going to start this fast so not aware about what to eat in this fast. Can anybody guide me??
can we eat roti and sugar, salt in this fast??

Anonymous said...

Hello,

Thinking that the fast was tomorrow, on Saturday,03/02/2013, I had meat for my lunch today. I have never missed any Sankashti. Not that I follow it very strictly. But I am really upset that I missed it. I want to follow Sankashti every month. I stay in USA. What do I do? I read above that I could donate food or clothes to poor and then continue with the Sankashti from next month on. Is it necessary to donate today itself? Please advise.

Praveena said...

No you can donate it when you have time. You can also fast on another suitable day to make up.

Thank you so much for replying Praveena
