Sama Pancham is a unique ritual observed mainly in Gujarat in the Bhadrapad Month (August – September). Women and farmers observe certain rituals on the day. In 2013, the date of Sama Pancham is September 10. On the Sama Pancham day, people cook and eat only Sama grains. The ritual is observed on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) in Bhadrapad Month. On this day, farmers and people associated with agricultural activities cook and eat Sama – the seeds that a kind of wild grass.
Women observe on the day rituals associated with Rushi Pancham. Some women avoid performing religious rituals on the day and indulge in singing of bhajans.

is it only samo that we can eat???like if we cook samo is it allowed to put potatoes and carrots and all in it?
no u cant put patato because its grown in farm and they use plowed the farm....so anything that is plowed can not be eaten...according to the gujju beliefs..i hope this helps !!

No all people can keep the vrat. it is not a full fasting. As discussed above you can eat samo.

It is dedicated to agriculture. It is performed for a better yield. Sort of thanksgiving.

Its nothing agricultural, its related to women's menstrual cycle . If unknowingly a women does something wrong rituslly during these days then she keep this fast as a mark of apology. One can read stories from elders
