Thank you so much for your articles. It is great you are writing the importance and exact dates to be observed for various parts of India. It will be a great service if you have the chance to put dates for the Hindus who are in other parts of the world like mainly in US and UK. Like i believe Makar Sankranti is on Jan 13 in USA.

Sankranthi is celebrated with gusto in Karnataka as well. It is the harvest festival. It is celebrated by painting the horns oxen (the ones used for ploughing) with bright colors, performing puja to the newly harvested grains, making a special dish called huggi with the freshly harvested grains and distributing / exchanging a mixture of roasted sesame seeds & jaggery (Ellu - bella), molded sugar candies (sakkare acchu) and sugarcane pieces. On the day of Makara Sankranti in Karnataka, people will celebrate the festival by distrubuting Ellu, Bella & Kabbu ( Ellu, Jaggary & Sugarcane) to all and forget all their misunderstandings.
Wish all the readers of this forum a Happy Sankranthi.
On that day those who are performing tharpanam, please wear KOMANAM and do the tharpanam, at least on tharpanam day " performers should wear komanam "
when it is supposed to be celebrated? 14th or 15th
It is to be observed on January 15 morning. This is because the Transition takes place at 12:59 AM on January 15. As per Hindu lunar calendar this is on the night of January 14 - a day in Hindu calendar is from sunrise to next day before sunrise.

Happy makar sankranti 2 all....
I do not agree with your explanation of why Makar Sankranti falls on two days.
If a day is from last sunrise to next sunrise then 12:59 AM on 14th Midnight (00:59 since midnight on 15th according to "usual" calendar ) should still be counted as 14th December, isn't it? So if you are sure that the transition happens on 14th Midnight then it should be celebrated on 14th. The reason you have Makar Sankranti on Two days is because we still have 2 different kind of calendars (and hence two ways of calculating the transition time)
You celebrate Makar Sankranti on 14th or 15th in Gregorian (our usual calendar) based on what calendar you follow to calculate the dates. You follow one calendar and there would just be one date. If all of us were following just one calendar then there would be just one date.
It is difficult to put "exact" date for an astronomical observation and the best people can do is "guess" based on past observations.
Hello Hi. Relatives, near and dear....
WISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY MAKAR SANKRANI...........
MAY THIS FESTIVAL BRING ALL SORTS OF HAPPINESS
AND PROSPERITY IN YOUR LIFE
