Ghosts in Hindu Religion – the Preta Concept in Hinduism

Ghost in Hinduism is referred as ‘preta’, ‘pey’, ‘pret’ or ‘pretam.’ Do Hindus believe in ghosts? It depends on the individual but it is believed that majority believe in ghosts. The concept of ghosts in Hindu religion is often associated with those people who had an unnatural death like murder, accident, etc and those dead people who were not given proper Hindu dead rituals like Shraadha or Tarpan.

In Hinduism, there is the concept of Kshooshma shareera apart from the physical body. This Kshooshma shareera is a sort of carbon copy of all the impressions of the five senses of the physical body. It is said in the Brahma Sutra that this acquired impressions is carried by the soul when it leaves the body.

What is left of these impressions on natural world, also referred as pinda shareeram, are completely destroyed through the various rituals performed to the dead in Hindu religion.

So the primary aim of Hindu death rituals is to destroy all the impressions that are left of a dead person in natural world and to release the soul. Therefore, what is popularly referred as ghost is completely destroyed by Hindu dead ceremonies.

If you carefully examine all the ghost stories, you will realize that the ghosts are associated with those people who had met with an unnatural death or whose ‘pinda shareera’ was not destroyed through the usual Hindu dead rituals. Such ‘pinda shareera’ will only get destroyed after a longtime and the natural destruction will depend on the aspirations and desires of the ‘pinda shareera.’ And such people are believed to roam the graveyards and there are references in the Puranas of Lord Shiva having an army of pretas or ghosts.

Now can a preta enter another person’s body? No. This is against the basic tenant of Santana Dharma (Hinduism) as a body can only have a single soul.

But hearing about the unnatural death of a person can make the listener sympathize with the dead person. And sympathy will become empathy and it can go to such an extent that the listener will assume the role of an agent to help the person who had met with unnatural death. This particular aspect has been widely used in Indian movies and folk stories and is often misunderstood as ghost.

All latent impression of dead person referred as ‘pinda shareera’ is destroyed by Hindu dead rituals like Shraadha and Tarpana. So the question of such souls roaming around as ghosts does not exist. Those ‘pinda shareera’ that did not receive proper burial get destroyed in due natural course.

But the greatness of Santana Dharma is that while performing rituals to dead ancestors, people knowingly or unknowingly perform rituals to all the dead. Thus it is believed that annual sharaadha ceremony performed destroys all the latent impressions of all the dead. Thus what is called ghost is properly dealt in Hindu religion and is given proper rest through rituals.

The article is good and provides for a rational explanation based on scriptures. Many adherents of Sanatana dharma don't know these things and consider Shraadha to be blind ritual.I think this will help imbibe better faith in Shraddha and Vedic science.

Of course, the ghost can enter another human body but it can only control the mind and thus the senses. The body still belongs to the soul though and it still is seated in the lotus of the heart.

This is a very tough subject. There are well documented cases of immediate (within an year) reincarnation of people not cremated according to hindu rites. The pind shareeram may not necessarily be destroyed by shraddha, as I have heard of even people who regularly perform shraddha definately communicating with the ancestor- probably it has to do with the efficacy of the rites( which must be as per rules laid). There are likely to be different ways the pinda shareeram can be destroyed. Ghosts have been seen by individuals with their eyes. Such records are available even in mahabharat for example the story of yavakrida. To sum it up, I cant agree with this simplistic explanation of a subject which is both mysterious and has no one answer.

Namaste,
Yes i do believe in Ghost concept...!!!
Eg: In Hanuman Chalisa there is saying "Bhoot Pisach Nikat nahi ave"...as tulsidasji has written it....!!!

what ever you said is true except that preta can enter the body of any human also you said that "a body can have a single soul" is also not true, think about the millions of micro organisms which are living in your body.

So if a person act like a ghost entered another person's body is a psychological disorder??

Rudhran said...

The view is simplistic and ignore other evidence and witnesses. It's also absurd to say that a person claimed to be posessed is actually a mental disorder patient. There are alot of evidences of ghost sighting even by the non-believers.

Just curious.
What happens to a soul that was carried by a non-Hindu body? This question was well answered when you said "annual sharaadha ceremony performed destroys all the latent impressions of all the dead".

But why is there happenings of paranormal activities in old castles, abandoned prisons and even hospital? Weren't these impressions responsible for the paranormal activities got destroyed by the annual rituals??

Regarding preta or ghost concept, I would like to give my insight. I agree with the author on presence of ghost in another live body. According to Hindu theology two souls cannot present in one body. Then what about the ghostly activities by a living human being? Take an example of a hypnotist, who have full control on his/her patients body and mind. The same aspect is relevant here. A ghost can control the mind and body of a sympathizer. The ghost or preta does not have any super natural power also. But in their terrain, they are masters. It has been recorded that ghost activities happens with a person who has a fear factor of that.
The above guy asked a interesting question about the presence of paranormal activities in old castles, abandoned prisons or likewise places. Like any living-being, ghost also like to protect their privacy. Ghostly or other super natural activities are happening everywhere but we do not want to see them is the fact. Our conditioned mind is the culprit for that. If you do a search, people living in the metro cities have their own version of the ghost stories. Further, the above said places like prisons, hospitals or castles are dealing or dealt with more distressed human beings than any other places, adds more calorie into the ghost stories.

In Hinduism there is no death as we are all forms of the Supreme Truth. What happens is just tranformation.

Abhilash,

This is really a difficult subject..thanks for giving such a simple and rational explanation..:)

If our rites for the dead destroy all the impressions of the five senses in the deceased, how come their karma goes with them to determine their next life?

Also, how can we know if the rituals have been done correctly? Do the rituals have to be done 100% correct to be effective, or 80% correct, or 50% or 20% or only 1% correct - and what if A ritual is done which is completely wrongly done?

In other words, are the rituals effective only in their totality, or is it some part of our long and complicated rituals which are effective? If the latter, which parts are the effective ones?

I find that modern day priests are conveniently making the rituals shorter and shorter, for deaths just as for marriages and other ceremonies.

Hinduism is Great. Its all scientific theories are time tested and there is no doubt about its greatness.

You Guys must research on it. If you do not perform Shraadh and tarpan (if your father and mother are dead ) then you are in worst trouble......This is due to Preta Atma, because he or she does not have any thing to eat...so it eat your balance...Remember

The solution is perform Shraadh whenever it is due, you will be immensely benefited there after.

Perform puja of Lord Shiva... 3 days or 11 days..you shall achieve what ever you wish in this life...Preta gets satisfied after Shiv puja because he belongs to Shiva..He is part of the army of Shiva...which is the maya shakti of Shiva in different form...to trouble those who are not obeying his command.

Preta, Ghost, Jinnat and many others enter into another soul purely for eating and enjoying...and will leave the person when person gets dead...there after they will catch other person and so on....

Protection is do daily Puja with invocation of Lord Shiva in your daily prayer ....You shall be blessed.

Lord Shiva is the only way to achieve MOX...No body else

what happen to the soul of the people who commit suicide ?

According to Hinduism, if yearly shraddha and monthly amvasya tarpan is not done, the undesirable traits of the departed ancestors (your father/mother and both their parents)will appear in your grandchildren. Their undesirable sense inclinations (could be their desire to enjoy alcohol, tendency to gamble etc) will manifest in the grandchildren. If the desires were very strong these become almost material (the ghosts) and they enter at the time of conception. Today we talk of genes...But the fact is that simple medicines like shraddha and amavasya tarpan help a great deal in ensuring that the progeny is not tormented by these factors and has hopefully, only good karma to work out!

There are sthool jagat and sukshma jagat. There are things which can be seen with these eyes and which require divya drishti. There are powers which one possess and one can acquire. The super natural powers are there. And there are means to acquire them. They may be goodly or satanly good or bad. Good deeds and bad deeds. The nagativity brings nagative powers and positivity brings positive powers. Ashta Siddhis and Nav Nidhis and Maya are the examples. There are ways to obtain them in Vedas through beej mantras and through yoga in Patanjali Yoga. There is no dispute one can attain even today. Try.

sir, i am amused at the rantings of Annonymous in the foregoing comments column. when you say the present-worldly manifestations are destroyed is not understood. when a person dies, the soul (atma) leaves the body but is considered blind. it does not know it is "dead" so till such time the mortal remains are consigned to the flames, keeps hovering over it. once it is destroyed, according to hindu rituals, the soul is anchored both at the bank of the river and at the last place of its mortal existence. there for 7/8 days it is nurtured like a baby and given each set of limbs and is made "brand new". whatever ties it wants to retain in this world is further cut off when the soul is fed food without salt etc. on the 10th day and asked to leave for wherever it is destined. on the 12th day, the departed soul is made to join the ancestors then it becomes pitru. till such time, the term "preta" is applied. and hindu rituals are carried out for one full one year through monthly rites wherein the soul is shown way (guided) to attain pitrulok.

Someone asked a question above: my name is preta. no parent will name his/her offspring in such a fashion. either the name is not complete or the real name, if female, could be Preeta, a mahabharata name, if i am not mistaken, of kunti. correct me if i am wrong.

our religion is maligned by half truths and misunderstandings. otherwise, this is one religion which is complete in all aspects of life. how many hindus know this? are you listening Annonymous ?

rabid hindu said...

I would reply to Annonymous' March 13 note:
Dead persons do not really care if you do shraddha or not. what is important is, you are doing these rites for your own welfare. by feeding your ancestors everyday (theirs) you only earn their blessings. As per hindu scriptures, the water you take out while washing clothes and the water falling off your body when you take bath goes to satiating the thirst of our ancestors who died childless or forgotten. when we do pind daan, at the end of the list of our known ancestors, the mantra says that the pinda is also meant for those known and unknown pitrus in your lineage.....

so all the satisfied pitrus only bless the person causing their hunger and thirst. in astrology also, a person neglecting his dead parents becomes an object of anger by them ! they in turn cause so much trouble for you in this life. ask any astrologer, he will tell you.

I have had a spirit peel off of me and it was in close enough quarters that I was not aware it was there. It came back a couple weeks later, as well. (I would call it a "she" ghost because that was her ambience)
If you look at relativity-the general theory-there are massive gravitational waves plowing through the earth and ourselves. There is compression of 3.5 billion years (at least) of life that has come and gone, not just humans, but all that existed. The very large majority of this stuff is not within our imnmediate consciousness, but exists to an extent within every viewpoint we occupy and observe.
Earth is a nice place to visit and to learn from, to a point. But making a home here, not so easy, for the seen or the unseen. My opinion.

rabid hindu said...

Hey annonymous, you are really confused individual from your rantings and ravings. it is not every day that spirits accost humans and "peel off". dont keep on inventing things and spew half baked ideas in these columns. a spirit cannot enter a human body if there is mental resistance, do you know this truth? it is like occupying our house without permission, if you close the door on the spirit it has no right to dwell in your body.

Rahu and ketu are two imaginary but the powerful graha known as chayya graha or shadow planets as they have powers to block out the sun light and crusify sun for 4/5 times in a year. it causes sun eclipse and moon eclipse as sun and moon are the soul and mind. Rahu and ketu known as " Moon nodes " are the intersecting points of moons orbit crossing the ecliptic apparant sun orbit without any physical mass in the sky .so they are called as karmic planet controlling our karmas. Rahu creates karmas for future in order to sustain the rebirths in cycle for us and Ketu gives the past karmas of previous (past) life. Ketu is the liberator of souls from our physical body by closing the karmic accounts and hence our rishes wrote ketu adidevatha is chitra gupta who keeps the record of our karmas and rebirths accounts. Hence ketu is concerned with the Spirit world and ketu is responsible for ghosts - ketu is invisible like rahu . Does ketu make any mistakes liberating the soul without closing the karmic accounts so that soul with desires linger in the earth to complete his desires. i am making study on this to find out the truth. Hinduism is a true scientifc religion as Rahu denotes western religion - that believe in Resurrection of physical bodies from grave on the judgement day as no karms are attached to them, while kedu denotes the eastern religions that believe in rebirths and karmas. how can we say karmas and rebirths are false ? Without the law of karma and reincarnation , it is not possible to explain as to why such inequality and inequity , disparities occurs in the world with good pious person suffers while a bad atheist enjoy the fruit of life with more comfort by repeatedly doing wrongful acts while good person is suffering lot. young child dies upon birth for a rich person inspite of best medical treatment while slum born child survive even in bad environment. why such things happen in the lift - it is purely due to past karmas and rebirths in the present life which reflects our past karmas ( good or bad deeds ) . so only hinduism alone gave this scientific karmic and rebirths theory while the western religions still linger with the false concept and faulty docrine in the world. let us enlighten the mind of all people to know the glory of our religion
