Tirupati Laddu Facts

Laddu, or Ladoo, is one of the most important offering and prasadam given to devotees at the Tirumala Tirupati Lord Venkateswara Temple. Tirupati Laddu is a spherical-shaped sweet made of flour and sugar. In fact, Tirupati and the huge laddus are synonymous. It is a customary duty of a devotee returning from Tirupati Balaji Temple to distribute ‘laddu’ as prasadam to his neighbors, friends and relatives.

Some quick facts about Tirupati Laddu

  • Around 150,000 laddus are made daily.
  • One laddu is given free to each devotee; the number of daily devotees that visit the temple is around 50,000.
  • A devotee can buy extra two laddus – a small laddu costs 25 rupees and big laddu costs 100 rupees.
  • The revenue from the sale of laddu annually is more than 11 million rupees.

  • Each laddu weighs around 100gms and is huge when compared with the normal laddu found in shops.
  • There is a super huge Tirupati Laddu known as Kalyana Laddu and it weighs around 500gms – ½ a kilogram.
  • Single largest laddu made is said to have weighed 32 kg.

  • The tradition of Tirupati Laddu is nearly 300 years old.
  • It is prepared by special hereditary priests known as archakas in special temple kitchen known as ‘potu’.
  • Ingredients used in Tirupati Laddu are Besan flour (kadalai mavu), Sugar, Cashew nuts, Cardamom, Ghee, Oil, Sugar candy, Raisins and Almonds.

On a day around 5000 kg of Besan flour is used.
Sugar around 10000 kg.
Cashew nuts around 600 kg.
Cardamom 150 kg
Ghee 300 liters
Sugar candy 400 kg

Tirumala laddu was bigger in size about 15 years back comparing to nowadays what the devotees get as prasadam we are ready to pay more but avaialability is only to the staff and also some laddoos are sold in black @ Rs 50 each specially by the security staff in the temple premises you will be approached by them and in a friendly chat you will be enquired your place of destination and after confirmation you will be asked if you need laddoos which are for sale.
I wish the TTD Trust notes down the difference between supply and demand hope they balance the same by opening a special counter for sale of laddoo Prasadam as per quantity required by the devotees.
Further i congratulate you for this wonderful blog.

It is quite fortunate that the Temple trust for patenting (under Geographical Indication of Goods Act) the laddu. A "goods" status to the laddu takes away its sanctity.

Mixing religion with IPR will have serious consequences. It is like playing with fire and petrol.

In the beginning of this year, the Trademark Registry granted a 'trademark on the picture of deity' in Attukal temple Thiruvananthapuram on a TM application by the temple trust. GI registry has made a similiar mistake this month by granting GI tag on Tirupati laddu. TRIPS forays into religion and faith... and the Indians happily welcome this demon dragging in to our temples. It's Incredible India

It is sad in the secular contries like ours, Prasad & gods are being patiented. The Govt is Of Kerala is using Sabarimala for minting money & andhra in name of Lord Venkateshwara. Call it Secular Devine tourism.

Tirupati vadai tastes as divine as Laddu. There is a saying that there are three things a Vaishnava should not miss :

Tirupati vadai, Kanchivaram kodai, Srirangam nadai.

Hey the laddu is very very tasty i remember when i visited for the first time and the taste is still on the tongue now the laddu is smaller and dry fruits are merely seen. If price is increased not an issue but the quality & quantity shall not be compromised.

Now it seems that laddu helps a lot to increase the strength of diabetic person. Laddu details are amazing. Keep it up.

@ tlb... they dont use sugar... thats why they use sugar candy (kalkandu)

Anonymous said...

for ladoo only jaggery should be used not sugar as sugar is injurious to health so also the sugar candy(kalkand) should not be used A prasadam should not contain injurious items venkatram cona

Jai Tirupathi! Feel like eating a ladoo now after seeing the ladooo pic and reading the ladoo discussion !!:)

More than giving free laddoos to devotees TTD officials should facilitate comfortable darshan to devotees which is not happening now due to arrogance of staff posted inside the temple.

The free laddu is very small in size. The laddus on sale are also of the size of tennis ball ( a bit smaller ). But the taste is great. Any day I relish a full laddu.

Even a tiny particle of Balaji prasadam will give love of God to all the souls in the universe, when accepted with a humble respect. The only reason we would want a bigger laddu, is to share it with more people back home :) Otherwise, if a proper submissive devotional attitude is not there while respectfully eating prasadam and remembering this is the causeless mercy of the Lord and not something we purchased by our own 'power', the spiritual benefit might not manifest (take hold) in our hearts, even if we eat tons of it. We can't purchase love of God, but if we could, no amount of wealth would be too big a price for such a valuable thing! :) Jai Baladeva!

While we are talking about the laddoo which is considered the prasadam, it will mean nothing but a form of food if cant get a good darshan of the lord. After spending hours and hours waiting, not to mentioned the time spend to travel from our home place and what do we get inside the temple before seeing the lord, THE ATROSIOUS ATTITUDE attitude of the staffs inside, the DEVINE SCANTUM of the place has been destroyed. Devasom board please correct this issue.

My last visit to Tirupati was in January this year. sadly, the temple has been reduced to a business centre now. Laddoos are machine made these days and cost Rs 20 each. They aren't available for free these days. Though people waiting for Darshan in the galleries get free food, milk and water, devotees find it difficult to make it to the main darshan area. The Tirupati devsthanam staff are often rude and do not treat people with respect.

My father said that in their old days, Ladoos contained lot of ghee but now there is no trace or sign of it.

Venkat Palety said...

Ladoo should be considered as prasadam and treated
if we get a chance to eat people are lucky to have this, there are still some people who had no luck to have that, atiny peace of ladoo should be taken with love and respect on god tastes good.

anything you do with love and respect gives positive approach rather then commenting on it

patenting is very much important. Adayar Ananda bhavan in chennai is preparing laddus and selling them commercially which are very similar to the Tirupathy laddu. I request people not to buy those laddus just to discourage them from immitating tirupathy laddus.
