How to do or observe Akshaya Tritiya and what are the special pujas? In 2019, the puja can be performed on May 7 as per Panchang and Hindu pandits. The main pujas on the day are dedicated to Ganesha, Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi and Kuber. On the Akshaya Tritiya day, wake up in the morning (between 4 am and 5 am) and perform holy bath (dip) in Ganga, sea, sacred ponds or other sacred rivers and lakes.

The entire day is auspicious so you can perform the puja at any convenient time.

Akshaya Tritiya Mantra

ह्रीं श्रीं लक्ष्मी नारायणाय नमः
Hreem Shreem Lakshmi Narayanaya Namah

Chant the mantra 108 times. Keep count on a chandan mala.

Akshaya Tritiya Puja

Start with a simple prayer to Ganesha. Offer Him prasad and take his blessings.

Worshipping Lakshmi-Narayana form is ideal. The combined form of Lakshmi and Narayana.

The main puja and prayers on the day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Therefore you can do a simple Vishnu pooja in the morning with Tulsi leaves and flowers. Some people also perform an elaborate Lakshmi puja or Lakshmi kubera homam.

People also visit shrines of Goddess Lakshmi, Vishnu and Lord Krishna.

Akshaya Tritiya Offerings 

Food offerings made on the day include sweet prepared from jowar or wheat. Offering chana or chickpea is highly meritorious.

Flowers offered to Goddess Lakshmi are lotus, white rose or yellow rose.

Akshaya Tritiya Puja - Elaborate

  • On the previous day evening clean the house and get rid of all junk.
  • Perform the puja during early morning hours just after sunrise.
  • Take bath and wear red or saffron color clothes.
  • Spread a saffron or red color cloth on the northeast side of the house. Keep a painting or photo of Ganesha, Lakshmi and Vishnu.
  • Take a kalash and fill it with water. Put some white chandan in it. Put a coin, piece of gold and silver in it. Close the mouth with coconut and mango leaves and keep it near the photo of deities.
  • Light lamp using pure ghee. One wick is ideal.
  • Agarbatti or dhoop should be of natural flowers.
  • Do tilak using golochan or white chandan (natural white sandalwood paste)
  • Offer uncooked rice smeared with turmeric.
  • Offer sindoor, roli and fragrant water or perfume (Attar)
  • Offer red color flowers.
  • Offer seasonal fruits.
  • Offer rice kheer or rice payasam as bhog or Prasad. Later share it with family members.
  • Chant the above given mantra 108 times. Keep count on a chandan mala.
  • You can also chant the Kanakadhara Stotram or Lakshmi Sahasranama.
  • After puja use all food items for cooking.
  • Pour the water in the kalash under a peepal tree.
  • Leave the mango leaves and rice mixed with turmeric under the mango tree.
  • Perform donation.
  • Feed a cow on the day with roti or green grass.

Special Small Processes on Akshaya Tritiya

Draw swastik using kumkum mixed in water on the front door and on the back side of the front (main) door. This will help in keeping out poverty. It will also help in keeping out negative forces. It will also help in getting the blessings of divine forces that visit the house. (Based on belief in North India)

Wash the north side of house with water. This will help in ushering in prosperity. (Based on belief in western parts of India)

Decorate the front door of the house with mango leaves toran. This will help in achieving happiness and prosperity in life. (Observed in all regions in India)

Those facing sudden shortage of money due to less income or job loss will get relief after offering prayers to Lakshminarayana. Chant any prayer you know and keep a coin near Lakshminarayana. Later take this coin and keep it in your purse. This will change your fortune. (Based on North India astrology)

For prosperity of family members and happiness in the family, offer moong (green gram) while offering prayers on the day. Later tie it in a yellow cloth and keep it in the kitchen. (Based on North India belief)

Those facing financial problems like debt, loan, job loss, loss in business etc should keep 12 small shells while offering prayers on the day. Later keep it in shop or locker or where you keep money. This will help in change of luck. (based on belief from north and eastern parts of India)

Akshaya Tritiya and Donations

Annadhanam – offering food to the poor is considered to be the greatest thing one can do on this day. Hindus believe there is no Dhanam greater than Annadhanam.

There is a popular belief that whatever one invests in on the day will continue to grow and bring prosperity. Therefore people invest in gold on the day.

People also make donations and give alms on the day. Umbrellas, sandals etc are also donated in some regions.

Since it is one of the most auspicious days in a Hindu calendar, people begin new ventures on the day.

As Akshaya Tritiya is Kalpadi Tritiya it is a good date to perform Shradh and Tarpan.
