Shanivar Vrat: Saturday Fasting Dedicated To Hindu God Shani and Hanuman

Talk about Shani or Sani to a Hindu and the first reaction will be fear and then the mentioning of ill effects and troubles. Shani is dreaded by Hindus, especially by those who believe in astrology. Many people observe an Upvaas or fast to avoid the adversities and misfortunes on Shanivar or Saturday. It is believed that those who have the blessing of Lord Hanuman are protected from the wrath of Shani. Therefore many people make it a point to worship Hanuman at home or in temples. Black is the preferred color on Saturday.

Shani, one of the Navagrahas, is worshipped in numerous temples and there are also temples exclusively dedicated to Sani. Devotees who are observing Shanivar Vrat usually visit Shani shrines. Black colored items like sesame til, sesame oil, black clothes, and black gram whole are offered to Shani. It must be noted here that the color of the idol of Shani is always black in color.

Those devotees who fast on Saturday only take a single meal that too in the evening after prayers. Food prepared usually consists of sesame til or black gram or any other black colored food item. Salt is avoided by many on the day.

Shani is represented as a deity carrying bow and arrows and riding a vulture. Some devotees worship a black iron idol of Sani. Some worship the Peepal Tree and tie thread around its bark. Black colored items like sesame oil and black clothes are also donated on the day.

Shani is so dreaded that many Hindus avoid journeys on Saturday. There are also numerous tales regarding the evil effects of Shani.

But generally it is believed that Lord Hanuman devotees are unharmed by Sani. Legend has it that Lord Hanuman had rescued Shani from Ravana. This happened during the burning of the Lanka episode in the epic Ramayana. Lord Shani had then promised that he would not trouble Lord Hanuman devotees.

Hi. My name is Rahul. I have a question on Shanivaar Fasting. I had been worshipping Bajrangbali every saturday while I was in India, but after coming to US, that has changed with the busy life.

However, over the past 2 years, I am facing several obstacles.

My mom recomended that I do Shanivar. While my wife is against it. She does guruvaar.

My wife says, that if you do shanivaar, you offend Shani, and that means bad luck. And also that, only unmarried male are supposed to do shanivar.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

abhilash said...

Namaste Rahul..you can worship Lord Hanuman on Saturday there is no problem as it is said that Lord Shani spares those who worship Hanuman...

Another day that is chosen to worship Hanuman is Tuesday...This is very popular in North India...

Hanuman is worshipped on Thursday in Kerala and in South India....So you can choose any day to worship Hanuman there is no problem.

Hi everyone.. I have been keeping sat fast for over 2 years. Here is some info that I would like to share with you people...
1.Sat fasts are kept in sets of 33.
2.You are not either supposed to keep them continuously or take break after every 11th fast.
3.After 33 fasts are over.. on the next sat you are supposed to do the udyapan. It should happen early in the morning. I held a havan when i finished my first set of 33 fasts.
4.You can eat fruits, have milk , tea. coffee etc. but should not take any cereal(any form of ann) and salt.
5.Only in the evening before it gets dark you should eat something made of black daal(urad). Like black dal and rice khichdi. or black daal pinni(laddu) etc.
6.If you give something black (black cloth or daal or sesame seed or mustard oil) to poor then it's very beneficial
7.Recite shani chalisa everyday after bath.. it's good for mental and physical peace

I have been told to offer oil to Hanumaan Ji or Shani dev in temple, & fast on Saturday for sadhesaati. Only there is 1 little thing I need advice on. I Live in an area with no Shani temple, the local Hanuman Ji temple does not accept ani donations of oil or any thing except cash & cloth, & dry & fresh fruits at the prayer times. And there is no peepal tree or Ak plants any where near or far. Where should I offer the oil? The priest said I can put it in the roots of ant tree. But I am not so sure if that is the right thing to do. The laws here do not let us do a lot of things that are usually a part of daily rituals in a Hindu temples, (so much for freedom to practice religion.) Can someone please help with this?

Hi,

@ Swathy...there is no problem. You can pray at home to Hanuman and Shani no problems.

There is no hard and fast rule regarding fasting. You can take milk and fruits etc.

Hi
I am also fasting on saturday for shani dev and this week will be nine.
So i have been fasting without eating non veg and no salt during the day but i believe if we do a vrat with shani dev in our heart and as long as we do it with pure sincerity shani dev will be always here to protect us against any evil. So we should stop saying that we should do this and that. Our action should be wth sincere heart. We should always think about the poor and the needy people who need us. Think about those sick people alone without family lying on a hospital bed, pray for them, think about those childred who does not have anything to eat. I visited India and after dinner in a restaurant in Delhi i found two children asking for food and one of them was very sick with fever. And they were alone without anybody around to take care of them. I came back to my country with this in my mind. Our real duty is to take care of them not to see wat should be eaten or not its doing good action which please the almighty please please think how we can help these poor children in India they need us. Shani dev will be happy if we do good for them. Thanks

Hi, I have been doing Shani pooja since September of 2011. However, I did not realize I had to be vegetarian that day or fast. I have been doing other rituals with mustard oil and black cloves, and I am wearing a blue sapphire. Since I have been doing all things mentioned above to appease Shani, can not fasting or being a vegetarian have an effect? Can I start fasting on the next Saturday or is it too late? Also, how long does it take usually to see the effects of Shani pooja? Thank you.
