Varalakshmi Vratham 2013 date

Varalakshmi Vratham is a popular ritual observed by married women in South India and Maharashtra. In 2012, the date of Varalakshmi Vratham is August 16. Goddess Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and prosperity – is worshipped on this day.

Varalakshmi literally means the boon granting goddess. Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping Ashtalaksmi – the eight goddesses of Wealth, Earth, Learning, Love, Fame, Peace, Pleasure, and Strength.

Varalakshmi Vratham Myth
According to Hindu mythology, once Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva about a vratha that will be beneficial to women. Lord Shiva then mentioned the importance of Varalakshmi Vratha. The conversation on Varalakshmi Vratha between Parvati and Shiva takes place in the Skanda Purana.

To illustrate the importance of the Vratha, Lord Shiva narrates the story of Charumati. Pleased with Charumati’s devotion to her husband and family, Goddess Lakshmi appeared in her dream and asked her to perform the Varalakshmi Vratha. The pious Charumati invited all her neighbors, friends and relatives and performed the Varalakshmi puja as directed by Goddess Lakshmi. Soon after the puja, all the people who participated in the puja where blessed with wealth and prosperity.

According to another Hindu legend, the origin of Varalakshmi Vratha is associated with a game of dice played between Lord Shiva and Parvati. Goddess Parvati who was winning all the games was accused of cheating by Lord Shiva. So they decided to appoint Chitranemi, a gana of Shiva, as the umpire. Chitranemi ruled in favor of Lord Shiva and this angered Goddess Parvati who cursed him to be a leper. Shiva asked Parvati to forgive Chitranemi and she agreed to revoke the curse if he watched Varalakshmi Vratha performed by pious women. The tradition of Varalakshmi Vratha started from then onwards.

Going to do Varalakshmi Pooja this year and was going through Hundi blog to find info on pooja. I found about 7 to 8 postings to help me out. But I driven to post a comment here because of the above comment.

Abhilash had done a fantastic job here. He is definately a God sent. Simplistic, easy to read and understand perspective postings. Liberal thoughts which makes Hinduism closer to everyday person and not a higly ritualistic performance which is exclusive only to few.

So I guess Kirhmuru, why don't you post your 'reaserached facts' instead of asking others to do it for you.

My belief: a myth is a myth in any other words but the lesson from the myth is that matters.

i fully concur with krish about the word myth.
Hindu religion is through experience /facts for the last several thousands of years. it is fathomless . it has to be relished. recent example being Julia robert coming into the Hindu fold after experiencing the rich culture./ ganapathy

I just want tell few things, our gods are shown with all the armaments etc are for those who are said if you do bad things you will be punished, but as time and belief or faith improves to higher level gods will be more and more pleasant looking, and finally when you have realy attained a very high level like certain saints Rushi does not require an idol or moorthy,so these poojas etc etc are for lower level humans for a very high level it is not required so these are not MYTH's(practices and faiths) by any chance.any coments are most welcome shekar avadhani

It has been proven by modern science that story telling is the most effective way to get across a point to someone. Our forefathers were experts at this and we find reams of stories in our scriptures - right from moral based Panchatantra or epics like Ramayana and Mahabharatha or even the Upanishads and Vedantas.
Many-a-times we all fail to perceive beyond the story. Story is a mere illustration of a larger Truth. Cut through the story and realize the pulsating Truth it represents!

Abhilash - you are doing an great service. Continue the good work !
