Tamil New Year 2014 – Varsha Pirappu – Puthandu 2014 date

The Tamil New Year, Varsha Pirappu or Puthandu, is observed on the first day of Tamil month Chithirai, the first month as per traditional Tamil Calendar. In 2014, the date of Varsha Pirappu or Tamil New Year is April 14. Chitirai 1 is an auspicious day for Tamil speaking people in India (Tamil Nadu) and across the world, especially in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and South Africa.

A major highlight of the Tamil New Year is the viewing of ‘Kanni’ – meaning auspicious things. Legend has it that viewing auspicious things on this day will bring good fortune throughout the year.

After viewing the Kanni, it is time for a ritualistic bath. After the bath, it is time to draw the ‘Kolam’ or Rangoli (Tamil New Year Kolams). The ‘kolam’ is believed to bring good fortune to the famil members. Then, the doorways are decorated with mango leaves.

After this the family assembles for prayers. The prayers begin w
ith the lighting of the traditional lamp (kuthu vilakku).

The lamp is placed next to a brass bowl with a short neck, which contains water and is decorated with mango leaves – called the niraikudum.

Then, it is time to head to the nearby temples to seek the blessings of the Gods. In some temples, people gather to listen to the Tamil Panchangam, which contains the predictions of the coming year.

You can find more details about Tamil New Year and what to do on the day in this article.

(Note - It must be noted here that in 2008, the Government of Tamil Nadu had officially made Pongal, the Tamil New Year. (Update - this decision was reverted by the present government) This decision was reversed by the Government that came to power in 2011. Irrespective of the legislations Varsha Pirappu or Puthandu is marked on Chithirai 1 in most Tamil Calendars.)

Why would the government make Thai Pongal the New Year when the traditional date has such a long standing history and is based on a very solid astrological/Jyothish event: the sun rises in Mesha?

Govt announced Jan 14 as Tamil New Year and still celebrating today also as tamil new year,So whats the use of issuing such new orders.....?

PUTTHANDU VAZHTHUKKAL
HAPPY NEW YEAR. Changing the New Year is politically motovated and un necessary. April 13/14 is also the New year of Sinhala,West Bengal, Sikh, Thai and Cambodian(Vishu for Malayali people) new year. It shows a interconnectivity of of Tamil traditions. Even Tamil Catholics in Sri lanka celebrate it in April.
Can anyone say what is the name of the New year.
My heart goes out to our Tamil brethern in Sri Lanka
I live in the UK and shall be going to the Temple in Birmingham
who are being extermitated mercilessly

I doubt if tamilians view a kanni, I think its malayalees who view kanni (april 14th is vishu or new year day 4 them)

We should not change our traditional things for cheap politics. May be Mr. Karunanidhi wants to register his name in the history. But its not acceptable. Tamil New Year is for all the tamilians all over the world. The state government rule cannot affect the whole world. We continue our tradition and we can celebrate our Tamil New year in Chitirai 1. It would be better if Mr. Karunanidhi withdraw the rule.

i cant accept the thought released by Mr. Karunanithi. if he not interested on chithirai he can celebrate on Thai. but he is not a authority to force people to change.
One thing i want to knw, in tamil nadu 1000 of problems is there to cure, like kaveri, population, illigal activities etc., then why he look for to change our tamil new year.
Mr. Karunanithi knows very well that, tamil language has no starting history(when its starts?), that means it was fixed by thousands of years or lakhs of years back. we dont have authority to change anything on this. please

Mr. CM i like ur ability and capacity in this age also ur working for peoples( if someothers is there in ur age and ur money and proud, they cant work, just simply roam all countrys and enjoy their life, but ur different for all)
thanks for ur good politics in tamil nadu.

Anaivarukkum Iniya Puththaandu Vaazhthukkal!!

As some one else said, Mr Karunaanidhi "We will remember you for making a try to change the Tamil New Year Day", But Dont Think that your name will be sculptured to the history as "Tamizh varudam maartiya Thanga thalaivan". Nobody cares u. Everybody knows u do all these for "Vetti vilambaram". Do something good for the people, dont always be trying to advertise yourself by conducting hell lot of "Paarattu Vizha". Ok?

Politicians should not meddle with the age old traditions. Tamil New Year falls in the month of April and this should be maintained.

It is not a government order that the new year will be celebrated in January. If the person wants to celebrate, let him celebrate in his house. The guy should not make an order making a fool of the public to gain political ends.

The politician who did this should know that he is not a beleiver in new year. Why should he meddle in the affairs of the community calendar.

Tamil new year is on April 14 only, I cann't accept Karunanidhi's thought on this.

Tamil new years have names and follow a sixty year cycle. What is the name or number of the new year? How do you identify one year from the other - for example for recording births? Is he going to give each year the names of his many wives, children and grand children?

Culture should evolve. If not, the followers wil be left behind.
The Hindu Tamil celebrates Siththirai.
The Muslim Tamil celebrates Muharram.
The Tamil Christians celebrate 1st January.
The Bahai Tamils celebrate their new year.

Where is unity and oneness among Tamils? A race which does not have a common date for new year. Are Tamils civilized? Chinese all over World regardless of religious differences celebrate their new year grandly. What about Tamils? No way these Tamils regardless of religious differences, will get together to have a common new year based on logic.Tamils are forever backward and will not accept progressive ideas for betterment.Because they are Tamil. A backward race.!
