Today – February 20, 2012 – is Shivratri

Today – February 20, 2012 – is observed as Shivratri. Mahashivaratri is the night dedicated Shiva. The formless Supreme Truth – Shiva – took form and appeared on this night to remove Maya or illusion and lead devotees on the path of bliss. The path to bliss is to realize that all that is living and nonliving is nothing but the Supreme Truth. There is no second. 

Observances on the day include chanting of Shiva mantras, fasting and keeping vigil at night. Special pujas are performed at midnight. 
Shivratri fasting is from sunrise on Feb 20 to Sunrise on Feb 21. Pujas begin at the night of Feb 20 and continue to early morning hours of Feb 21.

Tithi in Hindu Calendar on February 20, 2012 – Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi orthe fourteenth day during the waning phase of moon inHindu calendar and Panchang in all places. It is Krishna Paksha Trayodashi Tithi till 3:42 AM on February 20, 2012. Then onwards it is Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi Tithi. All time based on India Standard Time.

Nakshatra – Shravan or Sravana or Thiruonam Nakshatra till 11:15 PM on February 20, 2012. Then onwards it is Dhanishta or Sravishta or Chathayam Nakshatram.
Rashi or Moon Sign – Makar Rashi.
Festivals, Vrat and Auspicious days – Mahashivratri
Magh Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi or the 14th day during the dark phase of moon in Magh month in calendars followed in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa.
Phalgun Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi or the fourteenth day during the waning phase of moon in Phalgun month in calendars followed in Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chh…
