Ekadashi January 2017 date – Monthly Fasting for Hindu God Vishnu in January 2017

Dedicated to Hindu God Vishnu, Ekadashi Vrat is observed on the eleventh day of a fortnight in a Hindu lunar calendar. Ekadashi dates in January 2017 – January 8/9 (January 8 in most parts of India) (January 9 in western and central India) and January 23. Vaikunta Ekadasi is on January 8. A fasting from sunrise to next day morning sunrise is generally observed by many Hindus on the day. Some observe the fast from the start time of Ekadasi Tithi and break the fast at the beginning of Dwadasi Tithi.

The January 8, 2017 Ekadasi is known as Putrada Ekadasi in most regions. This Ekadasi will be observed on January 8, 2017 in most parts of India. In some regions it will be observed on January 9 and especially in western and central parts of India.

The famous Vaikunta Ekadasi in South India especially observed in Tirumala, Bhadrachalam Sri Rama Temple, Srirangam and other Vishnu temples is on January 8, 2017.

The January 8, 2017 Ekadashi is known in Kerala as the SwargaVathil Ekadasi.

The day is known as Mukkoti Ekadaasi at Bhadarachalam Temple.

The January 23, 2017 Ekadasi is known as Shattila Ekadashi

The preparation for Ekadashi fasting begins on the Dasami day – the day before Ekadasi. On the Ekadasi day, devotees observe complete fast. The day is meant for hearing religious discourses and performing pujas.

There are also devotees who do not observe total fast. They avoid grains especially rice and consume fruits, nuts and milk.

The fasting comes to an end on the Dwadashi day with the consuming of food cooked in one’s house.
