The Purnima in August 2010 is the Shravan Poornima or Sawan Purnima and is of great significance. Purnima, or Poornima, is the full moon day in the traditional Hindu calendar. In South India, it is known as Pournami and in some regions it is referred as Pournima. Some devout Hindus observe a fast on the day from morning to evening. August 2010 Purnima date is August 24.

The Shravan Poornima date marks the end of the holy Shravan month in North India.

The day is observed as Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi Poornima.

The annual Amarnath Yatra comes to end on the Shravan Purnima day.

The day is observed as Narali Purnima in Maharashtra and western coast of India.

This full moon day known as Gamha Poornima in Orissa.

Hayagriva Jayanti and Yajurveda Upakarma are also observed on the day. In South India, Brahmins observe the day as Avani Avittam.
