Story of Agastheswar Mahadev form of Shiva in Ujjain
Legend has it that once demons threw Devas (demigods) out of
heaven. Devas were roaming on earth and here they met Sage Agastya. When the
Sage heard about the plight of Devas he became extremely furious.
A huge fireball appeared due to the anger of Sage Agastya
and it started burning down the demons in heaven. The fire also hurt several
other living beings.
Sage Agastya repented his action. On the advice of Brahma, the
Sage went to Mahakaal Vana (present day Ujjain) and did penance before a
particular Shivling.
Shiva was pleased with austerities and penance done by the Sage.
He appeared and blessed him. He also told the sage that the Shivling would be
henceforth known as Agastheswar Mahadev.
