Akshay Navami – Amala Naumi

Akshaya Navami, also known as Amala Naumi, is the ninth day during waxing phase of the moon in Kartik or Kartika Month in a traditional Hindu calendar. In 2017, the date of Akshay Navami is November 8. In western parts of India it is marked on October 29, 2017. The popular belief is that the Treta Yuga started on this day. Some people refer the day as the beginning of the Satyuga. An important event on Akshay Navmi is the distribution of alms and receiving of presents.

The day is observed as Akshay Navami Parikarama Divas in North India. Goddess Jagadhatri is worshipped on the day in West Bengal. Vrindavan Mathura Parikarma is also observed on this day.

Legend has it that Lord Surya (Sun God) worshipped Goddess Durga on this day and was rewarded properties that is in possession of him. Therefore it is believed that which is given on the day will never be destroyed but will only result in growth.

Kushmanda Navami

Kushmanda Navami is believed to be the day when Lord Vishnu vanquished demon Kushmanda and restored Dharma. Kushmanda Navami 2017 date is October 29. It is observed on the ninth day during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) in Kartik Month. The day is of great significance in western and northern parts of India.

Kushmanda Navami is also observed as Akshaya Navami in many regions. The day is considered highly auspicious for new beginnings.

Popular belief in Hinduism is that Dvapara Yuga began on this day. It is the third of the four yugas or ages in Hinduism. The current is the fourth age known as Kali Yuga.

The demon Khusmanda had created havoc on earth. The name of the demon comes from the pumpkin creepers that grew from his head. Lord Vishnu annihilated him and restored Dharma.

Jagadhatri Puja 2017 date

Jagadhatri Puja is observed on the ninth day of the waxing phase of moon in Kartik month in Bengal. It is also known as Dhatri Pooja and Jagadamba Puja. Jagadhatri Puja 2017 date is October 29. Panchachara – Five Codes of Conduct in Virashaivism or Lingayat Sect

Panchachara are the five codes of conduct in Virashaivism or Lingayat Sect. They are:

Lingachara – daily worship of Shivling as the only God.

Sadachara – leading moral and virtuous life.

Shivachara – all people are to be treated as the devotees of Shiva.

Bhrtyachara – humility towards Shiva and his devotees.

Ganachara – good conduct of gana or group. No devotee can bear the use of abusive language against the master and ill treatment of men and animals. The obligation is to promote the welfare of everyone and thereby develop Lingayat sect.

Basvanna is considered to be the founder of Lingayatism or Lingayat Sect or Veerashaivism. The sect brought about sweeping social changes in Karnataka and surrounding regions around 900 years ago.
