Raghavendra Swamy – About Sri Raghavendra Tirtha Swami

Raghavendra Swamy was a great mystic and saint philosopher who lived during the 17th century. Sri Raghavendra Tirtha Swami was born in 1595. His original name was Venkatantha. His parents were Timmanna Bhatt and Gopamba. Sudhindra Tirtha, a famous pontiff in the lineage of Madhvacharya, initiated Venkatantha into sannyasa in 1621 AD and named him Raghavendra Tirtha. He was also appointed as heir of the peetha. Raghavendra Swamy had lost his parents in an early age. He was looked after by his elder brother and later by his brother-in-law in Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Later he went to the ashram of Sudhindra Tirtha and stayed there. He was brilliant in his studies and was well versed in all Shastras. Some people believe that he was an avatar of Prahlada.
