Story of Nagachandreshwar Mahadev form of Shiva in Ujjain
Legend has it that Indra, the king of Devas, wanted to know
about the holiest spot on earth. He inquired about it to Sage Narada. The sage without
any hesitation told Indra that the holiest spot on earth is Mahakaal Vana
(present day Ujjain) where Shiva resides as Mahakaleshwar.
All the devas immediately departed for Mahakaal Vana on
their vehicles. But they could not find a spot on Mahakaal Vana to land their
vehicles. Everywhere they could only see Shivlings.
They could not land in Mahakaal Vana because of the sins
they had committed in this and previous births.
The Devas then saw a brilliant man heading towards the sky. He
had attained Shivalok through his intense austerities.
Devas enquired how he was able to find a spot in Mahakaal
Vana which is filled with millions of Shivlings.
The man then told them to offer prayers to Nagachandreshwar
Mahadev. The Devas performed austerities in front of Nagachandreshwar Mahadev.
They thus found redemption and were allowed to move freely in Mahakaal Vana, the holiest spot on earth.
