Kozhikode Sree Kanteswara Temple Thaipooyam Festival and Annual Utsavam



Kozhikode Sree Kanteswara Temple is located in the heart of Kozhikode city. Muruga or Subrahmanya is worshiped here as subsidiary deity. The annual pooyam festival is observed in Makaram month. Kozhikode Sree Kanteswara Temple Thaipooyam festival 2016 date is January 24. The annual utsavam or festival in the shrine will be observed from February 29, 2016

Special pujas, rituals, abhishekam, Subrahmanya sahasranama archana and numerous other activities are held on the day.

Various types of Kavadi are taken to the shrine. Kavadiyattam and colorful procession of Kavadis are a major highlight.

It is considered highly meritorious to perform puja and take blessing of Sri Subrahmanya Swami on the day.

Kozhikode Sree Kanteswara Temple Utsavam or Festival

During the festival period, the temple is traditionally decorated with plantain, coconut leaves, flowers, leaves, traditional lamps and lights.

Melam, caparisoned elephants, fireworks are part of the festivities. Traditional performing arts, music and dance are staged during the period.

Various unique offerings are made at the shrine during the period. As it is a Bhagavathy Temple, the rituals observed here are distinctive.


The festival ends with Arattu. The utsava murti of the deity is taken out of the shrine for ritual bathing on the final day. Caparisoned elephants and melam are part of the ritual.
