What is Darsha Amavasya?

Darsha Amavasya, or Darsh Amavasi, is the no moon night in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar. Darsha Amavasya is present when the moon is completely absent. In other terms Amavasi tithi should be present after sunset and during moonrise to be counted as Darsha.
For example if June 17 is Amavasi and if the time is 4:00 PM on June 16 to 3:30 PM on June 17. Then Darsha Amavasya is on June 16 even though the actual Amavasi date is June 17.
Darsha Amavasya is chosen by some communities to perform Shradh.
Darsha means no moon night.

When to Perform Shradh and Tarpan if date of death is not known?

If the date of death is not known, you can still perform Shradh and Tarpan. Shradh and Tarpan are important annual ritual dedicated to dead ancestors in Hinduism. In case you do not know the date when the person died and know the month, then you can perform in on the Amavasi or no moon day in the month.

Another option is you can perform the shradh on the date when you received the news of death.

If you do not know the date of death and month, then it can be performed on Magh Amavasya or Margashirsh Amavasya – no moon day in Magh or Margashirsh month.

You can also offer water daily to ancestors and this is also Shradh. It can be done daily in the morning.

Apart from this, you can perform it yearly on Mahalaya Amavasi.

For people in Tamil Nadu, it can be performed on Thai Amavasi or Aadi Amavasi.

In Kerala, it is performed on Karkidaka Vavu.

Please note that for all Shradh purposes English date is not used. Tithi or nakshatra as per Hindu panchang and calendar is used. This change every…

Kiratarjuniya is a very famous story in the Mahabharata. The two main characters in the story are Kirata (Shiva) and Arjuna. During the exile of Pandavas in the Mahabharata, Sage Vyasa advises the Pandavas to use the exile period to propitiate Gods and become more powerful. Indra appeared before Arjuna and asked him to propitiate Shiva as only Mahadev can bless a warrior with different powerful weapons.
Arjuna then started severe penance – by only eating dry leaves and fallen fruits. Arjuna’s penance was so intense that heat began to emit from earth. This made the life of living beings on earth harsh.
Finally Shiva decided to appear before Arjuna as Kirata – the hunter.
When Shiva was approaching Arjuna, He saw a demon in the form of a boar about to jump on to Arjuna.
Arjuna also saw the boar.
Both Arjuna and Kirata shot arrows on the boar. One arrow hit th…

Swami Vivekananda Readings

Truth does not pay homage to any society, ancient or modern. Society has to pay homage to Truth or die.
Religion, the great milch cow, has given many kicks, but never mind, it gives a great deal of milk.
Manifest the divinity within you, and everything will be harmoniously arranged around it.
What we want is to see the man who is harmoniously developed … great in heart, great in mind, [great in deed] … we want the man whose heart feels intensely the miseries and sorrows of the world. … And [we want] the man who not only can feel but can find the meaning of things, who delves deeply into the heart of nature and understanding. [We want] the man who will not even stop there, [but] who wants to work out [the feeling and meaning by actual deeds]. Such a combination of head, heart, and hand is what we want.
