How to serve Onasadya – Onam Feast?

The preparations for traditional onasadya or onam sadya begin well in advance. Pickles, ‘sarkara varatti’ and ‘upperi’ (banana chips) are made in advance. Some items like ingipuli and pachadi the day before Thiruonam. The number of vegetarian delicacies in an Onasadya today ranges from five to 12. Earlier it used be between 16 and 24 and in some traditional onam sadya it used be eight varieties of eight items that is a whopping 64. But nowadays the number of items is limited and non-vegetarian fare has also entered into the menu list.

Serving the onasadya is an art in itself. And eating the onasadya is an even bigger art. The traditional method of eating helps in digesting such a huge vegetarian fare.

Story of Dnyaneshwar and Flying Wall – Changdev Maharaj’s Pride is Humbled

Sant Dnyaneshwar, also known as Jnaneshwar or Dnyanadev, is one of the most popular saints in Maharashtra. One of the famous stories associated with Dnyaneshwar is about a flying wall. The story narrates how Changdev Maharaj’s pride was humbled. Changdev Maharaj was a contemporary of Sant Dnyaneshwar and was popular for his yogic and Tantric powers. The story took place around 1400 years ago.
Sant Dnyaneshwar and two brothers – Nivritti, Sopandev – and their sister – Muktai – were respected for their spiritual powers and knowledge.
Changdev Maharaj wanted to test them. So he sent the siblings a blank paper. Sant Dnyaneshwar wrote 65 verses in the blank paper and returned to Changdev Maharaj. The verses later became popular as Changdev Pasashti – it contains in nutshell the entire teaching of Vedanta.
Changdev Maharaj did not understand what was written on the blank paper he had sent to the siblings.

The NGO helps the specially-abled members to make and market the Ganapati idols (murtis) during Ganesh Chaturthi Festival. Mid-day reports  This year too, the NGO has started the process of creating the idols for the festival that will be celebrated in mid-September. “Last year, we sold between 70 to 80 idols. There are about 15 students in our pottery and ceramics course, of which four or five are at a stage where they can make a complete idol by themselves. The rest help in creating the idols. Yajur Vedi Upakarma 2016 Mantras – Yajur Vedi Avani Avittam Sankalpam Prayogam

Yajur Vedi Avani Avittam Sankalpam Prayogam 2016 information are given below in detail. Yajur Vedi Upakarma, or Yajur Vedic Upa Karma, is the sacred thread changing ceremony observed by the Brahmin community that follows the Yajur Veda – one of the four Vedas. In 2016, date of Yajur Vedi Upakarma is August 18. It is observed on the Shravan Purnima day and is also known as Yajur Vedi Avani Avittam in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It is followed by the Gayatri Japam on the next day.

On the Purnima day in Shravan month (July – August), Brahmins who follow the Yajur Veda perform the sacred thread changing ceremony known as Yagnopaveetha Dharana or Janeyu Dharana. It is part of the Vedic rituals. Children also commence the study of Vedas on the day.

The popular belief is that Lord Hayagriva, an Avatara of Lord Vishnu, got back the Vedas stolen by demons on this day.

This ritual is not observed by most North Indian Brahmin communities.

Rig Vedi Upakarma 2016 Mantras – Rg Vedi Avani Avittam Sankalpam and Prayogam

Rig Vedi Upakarma, or Rg Vedic Upa Karma, is the sacred thread changing ceremony observed by the Brahmin community that follows the Rig Veda – one of the four Vedas. In 2016, date of Rig Vedi Upakarma is August 17. It is observed during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) of Shravan month and is also known as Rig Vedi Avani Avittam in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The Gayatri Japam ritual is also observed on the day.

As per Sringeri Mutt the date is on August 7, 2016.

On the Thiruvonam Nakshatra day in Shravan month (July – August), Brahmins who follow the Rig Veda perform the sacred thread changing ceremony known as Yagnopaveetha Dharana or Janeyu Dharana.
