Chandrashekara – The Story Shiva as Chandrashekara – adorned with crescent moon

One of the popular names of Hindu God Shiva is Chandrashekara. He got this name after he gave refuge to Moon or Chandra on this matted locks after Chandra was cursed by Daksha.
Legend has it that Daksha Prajapati, the master of civilization, married twenty seven of his daughters – the Nakshatras, lunar asterisms - to Chandra – the moon god. But Chandra was attracted by the beauty of only Rohini Nakshatra and ignored the other stars.
The disappointed daughters complained to Daksha about Chandra’s favoritism for Rohini. This behavior of the moon god angered Daskha. He cursed Chandra that his body of which he is so proud will fade away. Soon the body of Chandra started fading away and this caused upheaval on earth. Several plants and herbs need the moonlight to survive. Chandran then approached Lord Vishnu who directed him to Lord Shiva who is the supreme physician and the keeper of the sacred herb Soma.

Symbolism of the Earrings or Kundalas of Shiva – Alakshya and Niranjan

Hindu God Shiva wears two earrings or Kundalas. Traditional images of Shiva depict the two earrings named - Alakshya and Niranjan. Alakshya is believed to be one that cannot be shown by any sign – perhaps suggesting that the Supreme Truth (Shiva) cannot be captured in any form. Niranjan is said to be one that cannot be seen by mortal eyes. The Supreme Truth cannot be grasped by human eyes, we can only see parts of it and what we see is the tiniest of the tiniest drop in the ocean of bliss.

Symbolically, Alakshya and Niranjan suggest that Shiva is beyond ordinary perception.

In traditional images, the earring on Shiva’s left ear is one that is worn by women. The earring that is on the right ear is the one that is worn by men. Thus the two earrings also symbolize Shiva and Shakti – the Ardanarishwara form of Shiva.

One should not plunge into action without thinking – Swami Tejomayananda

One should not plunge into action without thinking. It leads to chaos. Sugriva spotted Ravana, strolling on his terrace. He got so carried away that he attacked him straight away. Sugriva was no match for Ravana. Sugriva somehow managed to return safely to Sri Rama. Even though Sri Rama praised him for his devotion, He also chided him for his hasty action, which could have caused great harm and would have damaged the morale of the entire army. He emphasized that it was important to plan the strategy of attack first and then act, and not the reverse.
We should think carefully about the consequences of our action and the time, effort and resources required before undertaking an action.
To be successful, plan out the work, keeping the ultimate and intermediate goals in mind. Think well about the consequences and requirements of the task. Mobilize the resources and actualize your plan.
