Thaipooyam Festival at Varkala Puthenchantha Charuvila Bala Subrahmanya Swamy Temple



Puthenchantha Charuvila Bala Subrahmanya Swamy Temple is located near Varkala in Trivandrum District. The annual Pooyam festival organized here in Makaram month attracts scores of devotees. The shrine is around 2 km from Varkala town. Puthenchantha Charuvila Bala Subrahmanya Swamy Temple Thaipooyam Festival 2016 date is January 24.

Special pujas and rituals are held throughout the day in the temple.

Carrying Kavadi is the main ritual on the day. People carry various types of Kavadi to the temple in procession. Traditional temple music is part of the procession. Some devotees enter into trance during the Kavadiyattam.

On the Pooyam day, people also pierce their body with small lance, or vel. This is done for getting desires fulfilled. 

Melam, various types of colorful Kavadi and fireworks are part of the festival.
