Thaipooyam Festival at Cheriyanad Balasubramanya Swamy Temple

Cheriyanad Balasubramanya Swamy Temple is located at Cheriyanad in Alappuzha  District and is around 8 km from Mavelikara and Chengannur. The annual pooyam ritual organized in Malayalam Makaram month at the Murugan Temple attracts hundreds of devotees. The shrine is dedicated to Subramanya or Muruga. Special pujas and rituals are held throughout the day in the temple.

Carrying Kavadi is the main ritual on the day. People carry various types of Kavadi to the temple in procession. Traditional temple music is part of the procession. Kavadiyattam is another major highlight.

On the Pooyam day, people also pierce their body with small lance, or vel. This is done for getting desires fulfilled. 

Melam, various types of colorful Kavadi and fireworks are part of the festival.
