Sangolli Rayanna Punyatithi is observed in Paush month. It is the death anniversary of Sangolli Rayanna (15 August 1798 – 26 January 1831). In 2018, it is the 187th death anniversary of the brave Sangolli Rayanna. He was the commander in chief of the Rani Chennamma who ruled the kingdom of Kittur. His immortal glory due to the fact that he bravely fought against the British East India Company. His death anniversary is annually held on January 26.
He mobilized local people and fought bravely against the British East India Company. The East India Company suffered huge losses due to his actions.
He was caught by treachery and was hanged from a Banyan tree on January 26, 1831.
Rayanna was buried near Nandagad. One of his partners had planted a banyan tree near the grave. It is has now grown into a huge Banyan tree.
A temple dedicated to the great warrior is located at Sangolli Village.
