Story of Matangeshwar Mahadev

Matang was born in a pious family but he was indulged in performing cruel acts from a very young age. A holy person once told Matang that he is performing cruel acts due to his bad karma in previous life.

Matang then wanted to know how to overcome the bad karma. The holy person advised him to perform prayers to Indra.

He then performed intense austerities for several years. Finally, Indra appeared before him and told him that he should get Brahma Gyan to overcome the present status. For this he should go to Ujjain and perform prayers to a Shivling located north of Siddeshwar Mahadev.

Matangi performed pujas as told by Indra. After several years, Shiva appeared before him and blessed him with knowledge of Brahman. Thus he overcome the bad karma and attained moksha.

As Matangi attained Brahma Gyan here the Shivling came to be known as Matangeshwar Mahadev.
