Story of Origin of Pravara River in Maharashtra

Story of origin of Pravara River is associated with Sage Agastya. Pravara River is a tributary of Godavari River and it flows through the western parts of Maharashtra.

Legend has it that Sage Agastya was performing severe Tapas. He managed to survive only on air and water. He performed this intense austerity for very long time.

Bhagavan Shiva was greatly pleased by the devotion of Sage Agastya. He appeared and blessed the Sage.

To help Sage Agastya, Shiva left a stream of Holy River Ganga at the spot where Sage Agastya was meditating and the stream is now known as Pravara River.
