Savitribai Phule Punyatithi – Death Anniversary of Savitribai Phule

Savitribai Jyotirao Phule was a social reformer in Maharashtra. Savitribai Phule Punyatithi is her death anniversary and it is annually held on March 10. She was died on 10 March 1897. She along with her husband, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, played an important role in women’s education and widow remarriage in Maharashtra. She ably supported her husband in his social reforms. She is also a pioneer of the modern Marathi Poetry.

She was the first female teacher of the first women’s school in Maharashtra.

She opened school for Untouchable girls in 1852.

She openly supported widow remarriage and opened a home to help orphaned widows and children.

During the plague of 1857, she and her son opened clinic and helped thousands of plague victims.

She was born on January 3, 1831.
