How Goddess Parvati Became Annapurna?

Goddess Parvati is Annapurna – the goddess of food. She is the one who nourishes and sustains all living beings. There are numerous stories which suggest who Goddess Parvati became Annapurna. Here is one such story.

Goddess Parvati was the daughter of Himalaya, the mountain king. Himalaya had several daughters who were married in rich families. But Goddess Parvati after marriage stayed with Himalaya as Shiva did not wish to possess anything.

But the other daughters of Himalaya were envious of Goddess Parvati and Shiva staying with their parents. So they ridiculed her by saying that her husband did not have a house to live or wealth.

Goddess Parvati was fed up with the taunting comments and she asked to Shiva to leave the palace of her father. Shiva and Parvati then went to Kailash. Shiva summoned Vishwakarma, the divine architect, and asked him to construct a city.

Vishwakarma thus constructed the city of Kashi. Parvati was amazed to see Kashi, which was made of gold.

Shiva made Goddess Parvati, the queen of Kashi and said that she will reside her as the Devi of grain. She will be distributing food to the inhabitants on earth from here. From that day Goddess Parvati was known as Annapurna. Even Shiva has to beg his food from Annapurna.
