Unique Samyapuram Mariamman Murti Worshipped in the Samayapuram Temple

Samayapuram Temple located near Trichy in Tamil Nadu is a very popular temple dedicated to Goddess Mariamman – a manifestation of Mother Goddess Shakti. The murti (idol) worshipped in the temple is unique as it is made using sand and clay.

As the murti is made using sand and clay, no abhishekam is performed using water, milk, honey, sandalwood paste, coconut water or any kind of liquid.

The usual abhishekam is performed on a small murti that is kept in front of the main murti. All important rituals are performed on this small murti.

The main murti of Samayapurathal or Mariamman made using sand and clay is performed abhishekam once in a year with flowers. This ceremony attracts more than 100,000 people and is known as poochoriyal orshowering of flowers. This is held during the last Sunday in Tamil Masi month and subsequent Sundays in Panguni month.

The temple is also famous for devotees making offering of replica of body parts. Those having ailments to a particular part of the body buy a replica of the body part and deposit it in the donation box in the temple.
