Story of Panchmukhi Hanuman – Why Did Hanuman Appear With Five Faces?

Story of Panchamukhi Hanuman is found in the episode in which Ahiravan and Mahiravana kidnaps Sri Ram and Lakshman and takes them to Patala to offer to their deity. Hanuman appears with five faces to extinguish five lamps. To kill Ahiravan and Mahiravana, Hanuman had to put out five lamps that were placed in five different directions. The life force of the two demons was kept in these lamps.


Ahiravan and Mahiravana had got a boon by Goddess Bhavani that they can be killed only after extinguishing the five lamps together.

In Panchmukhi Hanuman form – only one head is of Hanuman and the other heads are that of Hayagriva, Narasimha, Varaha and Garuda.

Hanuman took this form and extinguished the five lamps kept in five directions. Thus he was able to kill the demons and rescue Sri Ram and Lakshman.
