Today – February 27, 2014 – is Shivratri - Night of Shiva – Mahashivaratri

Today – February 27, 2014 – is observed as Shivratri. Mahashivaratri is the night dedicated Shiva. The formless Supreme Truth – Shiva – took form and appeared on this night to remove Maya or illusion and lead devotees on the path of bliss. The path to bliss is to realize that all that is living and nonliving is nothing but the Supreme Truth. There is no second.

Observances on the day include chanting of Shiva mantras, fasting and keeping vigil at night. Special pujas are performed at midnight.

Shivratri fasting is from sunrise on February 27 to Sunrise on February 28. Pujas begin at the night of February 27 and continue to early morning hours of February 27.

Usually Amavasya or no moon day falls after Shivratri but this year Chaturdashi or the fourteenth day during waning phase of moon continues on February 28.

Shivratri is held on February 27 because Chaturdashi is present during the midnight of February 27 and it ends by the evening of February 28.

Please do not waste, time and energy on complex rituals. Avoid pouring of milk, honey and other food items on Shivling. Shiva is Bholenath remember he was pleased by just few bilva leaves. So keep it simple and give more importance to devotion and understanding Shiva Tatva.

If you still feel you need to do more puja then use that money to perform Annadanam - food donation. There is no better puja than feeding the hungry.

Om Namah Shivaya
