Perumal – About Hindu God Perumal

Perumal is a term commonly used to refer to Hindu God Vishnu in Tamil Nadu. The word is widely used by Vaishnavites. Perumal is also used to refer to other deities worshipped in a temple. Kings in ancient times in Tamil land were also called as Perumal – a mark of respect.

Some of the temples associated with Bhagavan Vishnu with the title Perumal are Sundararaja Perumal, Varadaraja Perumal, Lakshmi Narayana Perumal, Adi Narrayana Perumal, Venkateswara Perumal etc.
Perumal simply means ‘god’. Thus they use it along with Muruga, Shiva and Ganesha. Thus we have Shivaperumal.
Currently the term Perumal is a synonym of Vishnu and His manifestations like Balaji or Venkateswara.

Old Kedarnath Temple Pictures – Kedarnath Temple in 1882

Here are few pictures of KedarnathTemple in 1882. Compare these old pictures of KedarnathTemple with the latest pictures to see what human greed has done to this holy place. Images are from the Geological Survey of India website. The photos are credited to Carl Griesbach.

In the beginning there were only small huts around the temple called chhan or chhappar. They were used by priests, saints and devotees. People used to trek all the way to Kedarnath from Haridwar and nearby places. First permanent structure was built around 1960. Then Pandas (or Priests) started building their own tin sheet structures. Large scale construction started in late 70s and 80s. Soon Human Greed looted the place economically and environmentally. Moral values to be followed in the holy place were not followed.

Sage Kapila Quotes

Teachings of Sage Kapila are found in many Hindu Scriptures. The following quotes are from Bhagavad Purana
The Atman in you is the Purusha. He has no beginning and no end. He is self-luminent, and there is nothing which is not the Purusha. He pervades everything. He is eternal.
For one to free from Maya one path is enough – Bhakti Yoga – Think on the Lord all the time.
Bhakti will of its own accord grant you Jnana and Vairagya. You do not have to seek them.
Love for Narayana will make you indifferent to other loves and so non-attachment is achieved. Bhakti will show you the way to the feet of Narayana. When a Bhakta realizes that the only aim in his life is to reach Narayana and strives for it that means that he has learnt the truth and his Avidya has vanished. He knows that Narayana is the Truth and nothing else. Sage Kapila
