Story Of Demon Mura

Story of demon Mura is found in the Mahabharata, Vamana Purana and Srimad Bhagavad Purana. Mura was guard in the palace of Narakasura. He guarded the palace in Pragjyotisha and one day was shocked to see several dead bodies of Asuras (demons) who were killed by the Devas (demigods). He then decided to protect himself from the Devas – for this he performed severe penance to please Brahma.

Brahma finally appeared before Mura. Mura asked for the boon that nobody should kill him in physical combat. Brahma granted the boon.

After receiving the boon, Mura defeated yakshas, gandharvas and Devas.

Mura then attacked kings on earth and reached the kingdom of King Raghu. Sage Vasishta was conducting a yajna at this time in the kingdom. When Mura reached the yajna spot to attack King Raghu, Sage Vasishta intervened and asked Mura to conquer Yama, the god death, and show his valor.

Mura then proceeded to towards Yamlok. Yama showed no interest in fighting and told him that Vishnu was superior to him.

Mura then proceeded towards Vaikunta to challenge Vishnu.

But reaching Vaikunta, Mura got the news that Vishnu had taken the incarnation of Sri Krishna was planning to attack Narakasura.

Mura then rushed towards the aid of Narakasura. He guarded the palace.

Mura fought Sri Krishna but he was killed by the Sudarshana Chakra of Sri Krishna.

Please note – in Srimad Bhagavata Purana it is mentioned that Demon Mura had five heads.
