Dashama Vrat is dedicated to Goddess Dashama and is observed from the first day of Shravan month in Gujarat. It is a 10-day vrat. Dashama Vrat 2016 date is from August 3 to August 12. Devotees also refer to the festival as ‘Dashama na Naurta’ – Navratri of the Goddess.
Devotees who are facing an adversity ('dasha' in Gujarati) and want to appease Goddess Dashama to overcome it observe the 10-day vrat. Goddess is widely worshipped in rural Gujarat and in cities by the lower socio-economic groups.
There are several temples dedicated to Dashama where devotees perform several rituals during the 10-days.
During Dashama Vrat devotees, observe partial fast and install her murti in their homes or public pandals. At the end of the tenth day an all night 'jagran' (staying awake) is observed.
