Today – February 17, 2013 – is the Shukla Paksha Saptami or seventh day during the waxing phase of moon in Magh month and is observed as Rath Saptami and Surya Jayanti. This Saptami is dedicated to Hindu God Surya, the sun god in Hinduism. In 2013, it is highly auspicious as Ratha Saptami falls on Sunday. Sunday or Ravivar is dedicated to Surya.
Hindu God Surya riding seven horses is worshipped on the day. The popular belief is that earth’s inclination towards the sun is the steepest on the day. Special bathing rituals with leaves like Erukku are observed in some regions today keeping in mind the curative powers of sun's rays.
