Kumbh Mela held once in 12 years at Allahabad (Prayag – Sangam) in India is the largest ever gathering of human beings for a single purpose in the world. So how big is Kumbh Mela 2013? Here are few numbers and facts to give an idea how big the Mela which begins on January 14, 2013 is.


Kumbha Mela 2013 is spread over 56 days.

100 million people will be participating in the Mela – India Government estimate is 10 crore.

Kumbh Nagri in Prayag (epicenter of the Mela) is spread over 58.03 square km

Total amount of business expected to be done due to Kumbh Mela is 12,000 crore rupees (120 billion rupees)

Jobs created direct and indirect during Kumbh Mela - 650,000

Law and Order
30,000 policemen are on duty during the period.
There are 30 police stations.
45 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in Kumbh Nagri

Fire department
30 fire stations.
Multi-purpose vehicle with gadgets that can evacuate people trapped in debris
In case of a power failure – fire department can light up an area the size of a football field in around 24 minutes.

40 water tanks of 18 kilolitres.

A 100-bed central hospital in Kumbh Nagri

Railway - Trains
750 mela special trains would run during Kumbh Mela.
800 railway coaches have been especially allocated in current trains for Mela.

1 lost and found centre,
and cloak room

Naini Railway junction will have 38 booking counters,
